I am planning to purchase a .22 rifle and I like Browning Buckmark a lot. However it is a bit expensive for a .22. I could get a Ruger 10/22 and get a lot of aftermarket stuff on it for the same money. So if there are any owners of Buckmark rifles out there, please convince me that it is worth the money, because i really like it. Or if it is overpriced and totally not worth the coin let me know too.

To be honest....I don't think you'll find too many Buckmark owners trying to talk you out of purchasing one. :D
Like you said, by the time you build up a 10/22, you'll have the same amount or more into it than a Buckmark is worth.

Go for it

I have a buddy who is on this forum and he has one...OMG that thing is a laser. Consistant gopher kills out to 100 yrds. The mags are expensive he says. So he reloads the one he has lots.
Safe to say he loves it.

You actually have 2 buddies that have buckmarks. I picked up one used off the EE late in the spring and had it in action when Brad and I went to Sask. Its my new favorite gopher getter and I have 30 or more to choose from. FS

I would reccomend the buckmark....

I have a couple of 10/22's, and a couple of buckies (rifle & pistol) in my latest 10/22 "creation" I have about $200 for the gun, $490 for barrel and trigger parts.... I made my own stock so add another $150 to that (for my time and the wood) or add $250 for a decent wood thumbhole stock.

So add that all up you are at $850 to $1000 to get a semi .22 that is a good as a $600 Buckmark rifle out of the box....

Well almost, out of the box the buckmark needs one small improvement, it needs a spring flip, it costs no money just about 2 mins more of your time when doing your initial cleaning, or wait untill you do your 1000rnd clean (that is what I did).

In my very humble opinion, once you shoot about 250 rnds out of a buckmark, you just can't go back!

And the mags aren't all that expensive ($29 bucks a piece) only about $4 more than a Ruger 10/22 10 rnd mag, they are just like hens teeth..... I have 5 on Backorder with WSS, 5 with Cabelas, 5 with my local g-store.... Been that way since Jan 09....

Cheers!

Thanks for the responses. Now, should I go for the heavy barrel model or the Sportster model? I like the fact that the Sportster has fiberoptic sights, and I do not have to spend extra money for the scope right away. Otherwise, is there a huge difference in performance between the Sportster and a Target model?

I'm addicted! I have 3 of them, 2 blued targets and a stainless target. I love em all. They are by far my favoite 22. I sold my 10\22 days after I got the first buckmark. I also have a buckmark pistol and now the rugers i have stay in the safe.

I have had a Buckmark for three years now and its been an excellent rifle. Very accurate, well made and looks way cool. One thing I would investigate is the issue of bull barrel vs standard tapered barrel. I have read on more than on occasion that the standard tapered barrel out shoots the target barrel by a substantial amount. But in terms of accuracy with my own Buckmark, I have to say that my 1022 with just a Volquartsen barrel will outshoot my Buckmark bigtime. There is no holding a candle to it and I have the target barrel on the Buckmark. I do love my Buckmark and would never readily give it up.

BTW, if you buy a 1022 you can turn it into a Tommy Gun when you get bored of it.:p

Funny, I had the opposite experiance...... I found the Target barrels to be much more accurate than the tapered....

To heck with it! just buy both! :D

Cheers!

I have the sporter model.I have a red dot on it and it is one hard to beat rabbit killer. Also it has tons of cool factor right out of the box no batteries needed(except for the red dot)

So,
What is the verdict on standard vs. target barrel? I like to have fiberoptic sights, but if the accuracy is that much better with a target barrel, I would have to consider it. Honestly I cannot say that I am that concerned with accuracy when it comes to .22. It would bother me more if my Blue Star was not accurate.
