Does anyone still get a good Remington that is accurate "Out of the Box?"

Remington 788

I have two of them purchased LNIB.

All the accuracy a hunter would ever need...........and then some more.

I totally agree.:) With today's tooling and machining, they could spit 788's out like cookies and still have a
very accurate & reliable rifle that would of course spank an M700 in the benchrest department.

In the smaller and lower pressure calibres, this is a done deal IMO. My 222 is very accurate and fun at the range or in the varmint hunting fields.
I've never had the incredible luck to find a 44 Magnum or one in 30-30 either.
But I think the achille's heel here is the brazed on bolt handle.

This is one factor that kept me away from exploring stiff loads in my 788 in 308. Hence this is a deer rifle only.
I have a Remington 700 HB Varmint in the same caliber Shell Shucker. And I keep those long range, hot handloads far away from the 788 hunting ammo.

Otherwise I completely agree with you sir. ;)

Yer right Brutus about not pushin' the pressures on the 788 due to the brazed bolt handle. I had one in .44 magnum that shot bloody amazing with Remington factory 240 gr. soft points, but the shallow rifling was not good for shooting cast boolits.

If ye know a good welder, then a quick TIG job will fix the bolt handle nicely.:)
