Does anyone still make a rifle that isn't drilled and tapped, or grooved for brand speciffic rings?
I want a nice bolt action in a larger caliber, that hasn't been factory f'ed over with ugly machining or holes drilled in it, and can't seem to find anyone who still makes a plain jane reciever :confused:
 
Being drilled for scope mounts is basically standard fare now...even on the biggest caliber bolt action cannons that come with iron sights installed.

Might have to custom order.
 
Your best bet might be to start with a military action and have it built into a fine grade sporter, although at this stage of the game, its considered rude and classless to cut up an unaltered surplus rifle, regardless of the project.

Not any holes here . . .

I am the epitome of rude and classless dear sir, but I would like to start with a new action, rather than something 80 years old.:(
 
You're pretty much stuck with a custom action - think Satterlee and Granite Mountain. They'll make exactly what you want. If you try somethign specific you'd be best served to just get the right thing rather than trying to make something close into what you're looking for.

I agree, it would be nice to start with what I want rather than modding something else. I was leaning towards sako etc, but those hideous recievers just make me think of the work needed to clean them up. Maybe a custom is the way to go, though I was hoping for cheaper.

You, of all people, know I am right. Sako, CZ etc, thier lines are ruined by the integral bases. And little screws in the reciever ring look awful too.
 
I would plug the holes on your favourite action with threaded rod, solder the rod in and then machine/grind the rods flush with the receiver. Once reblued you would have a hard time finding where the holes used to be.

Just buy an original military 98, get it stocked in a nice pc of walnut, barreled and chambered for 9.3x62. Get a nice front sight and use an all steel Lyman receiver sight for a rear sight. That way you don't get any drilled holes and you can also retain the original safety. Do some trigger work to it and you're GTG.

That's not a bad idea. Could do a nice job on a Model 70 like that. If you're re-bluing then why not go that way?

X2, any CM receiver can have the holes plugged, filed smooth and re-blued. I'm sure its been done many a time. Now integral bases you are pretty much stuck with...

Close, very close, but I am still set on that quarter-rib rear, and 375H&H, so close but no cigar. That said, yes, its along those classic lines I want to go. Oh yeah, and the price is a little high for tramping through the woods with :p
