does anyone use a 270 for long range stuff?

i have shot 2 1/8th inch group at the 500 meter range after a silloette match. i did not think that was to bad for that back stop

The biggest issue with the .277 cal is the limited variety of bullets on the market. BR quality bullets (jackets inparticular) are just not readily available. Hopefully one day we will have a better selection.

i have lots of differnt bullets tons of 90 gn for those pesky little dogs 130,s 135 match 140,s that ether one of my 270,s like lots of 150 and a couple of old box,s of 170 gr speers theres more than enuf bullet s to chose from for me ive stayed with 130,s as i have had realy luck with them never lost a moose, bear this is inortaint when shooting bad blackys at nite and any hit on the ram,s at 500 meters takes them of the rail no if ands or buts like some of the smaller cal,s do. an so so hit from a 25 06 or smaller and they dont fall. i have lots of bigger and smaller cal,s and this is what i take out most. it just works. and its not realy a mater what cal you shoot its what you shoot well if you do your part the gun will do it,s. hits count misses dont. this is what i do on the critters. no socpe ajustments sight in on the turkey (385meters) hold at the chicken,s rail(200) pig,s belly(300meter) dead on the turkey (385meter) and just on top of the rams back(500meter) :D

I have killed a big bodied whitetail at 540 metres, using 140 Accubonds in my 270WSM. The range was taken using a Leica 2700B and after multiple shots from the laser. I killed him, but he did not go down hard. He ran a long way and still needed another shot to put him down. The first bullet went into the lungs but there was not much expansion nor damage. The second shot was high on the neck so I could get a good look at the limited damage in the lungs from the first shot. I love my 270WSM and my 270Win, but I do not plan on any more long range shots unless I am carrying one of my 7mms or 300s.

And with the intro of the 6.8 Western, we finally have some badass long range bullets to send in .277-cal.

I'm wondering if someone has started sorting threads by unread/oldest to newest or something.

Going to try some of those in my 270 wby, but the twist is likely too slow. We'll see though. Perhaps the manufacturers will start sellning 270's with fast twist barrels. - dan

270 is a barrel burner. It can lose accuracy in a little as 600 rounds.
Like above there are better choices for long range.

I dont think I've heard a 270 described as a barrel burner before. Interesting. Kind of would depend on what you're comparing it too. It's certainly no worse than quite few cartridges being used for LR matches, in that regard. - dan

Here in the east shots that long are rare. Not saying there are not those who cant make the shot. At some point one needs to stop trying to prove something and think of a clean kill. Cant the hunter get closer than 600, 800 yards? Time to polish up stalking skills.
My range finder reaches out to 600 yards, so does the rifle but I wont on game. Just my opinion, your milage may vary.
