Hi,

Just wondering since the Norks are so cheap. Are they worth bringing for hunting? They are 308s so caliber is not a question.
Will you trust your Nork M14/305 with your life during hunting out of the box?
Or do you have to tweak them first for reliability and accuracy?

I am contemplating on buying one and using it for hunting. Any thoughts.......

I took my 2009 M305 out twice (once last year to sight in with FMJ) and just two weekends ago to confirm the same POI with my soft point reloads. It performed flawlessly and I even shot better with the open sights at 200 yards than with my scoped Stevens 200 in .308. I'd be very comfortable using her for deer this fall.

These rifles should be reliable out of the box, and shouldn't need any fixes to achieve decent accuracy. Two problems that used to be common in the past (not sure if they still are with the newer synth stocked samples) were rear sights that didn't click when adjusted and timing of the barrel, that would cant the front sight off of centre. That sometimes meant that people had to really adjust the rear sights high/low or off to one side to hit POA with their stock rifles, at least until they realigned the barrel. If only because of that, I'd say that it's preferable to handle the rifle you want to buy ahead of time to ensure that it doesn't have that problem. You could probably still use a rifle like that for hunting if you had to, though it might be kind of annoying to have sights adjusted like that.

I will probably take one of mine out at some point this year, just to change things up (and I have three tags for one zone, so might put the semi auto capability to use).

They are a bit heavier - fortunately I am not a woman.

EDIT: My hunting M14s is chopped to 18.5", wears a Sage stock, and currently have a Nightforce 2.5-10x24 mounted (FC-2 reticle). It is 12 levels of awesomeness

Polar bear(although I still haven't caught one yet), beluga whales, caribou, muskox ... yep I use my Norinco and my Springfield for all kinds of hunting ... ;)

This year I'm going out with my Tikka T3. A little more range and a lot less heavy.

I might still shoot a doe with the m14.
