Does everybody NEED a 1911?

You could say I know a teensy weensy bit about the Govt model pistol.
I've personally owned a few Govt model pistols, and their variations ...
like probably close to a 6 or 7 dozen of them. I also spent a decade as a pistolsmith specializing in tuning the Govt models for reliability, accuracy, and speed, so I worked on a few hundred more of them for paying customers. And I shot serious IPSC for that decade too ... made it to IPSC B Class shooting a Detonics Combat Master [ the mini gun ... chopped barrel and chopped grip ].
When it comes to the Colt design Govt model, BTDT ... Got the t-shirt ...
literally. [ I once wore an IPSC BC Team shirt to the Canickistan champs ].
During that time,
I HAVE SEEN EVERY SINGLE PART OF A COLT GOVT MODEL BREAK.
While a properly set up Govt model can be one of the most reliable mechanical devices on the planet, they don't usually come that way from the factory.
Now I shoot a Glock ...
that is, if I actually still had a pistol, it would be a Glock … I just want to shoot the thing, not work on it.

I was thinking about this today. I have a Sig 9mm and I figured something like a Springfield Armory 1911 would compliment it for a birthday present to myself in early October.
Does everybody need one? i've only shot one once.
GI or Mil-Spec?
This would be for informal plinking.
Oh yeah, and are 1911s as reliable as "euro guns" ? Say I was rich enough to be able to afford to feed it 400 rounds in one range trip; would it likely survive like my Sig without a hiccup or would it need cleaning by then?

Why yes! Yes, you do need one!
You were a gunsmith. So you hate working on the pistol any more.
I'm not a gunsmith, but sometimes I pretend to be one. And I love working on my pistol, making changes all the time.
I had a lot of fun in 1911s.

The last Kimber I saw in action had the front sight fall off and disappear into the grass. I must say I was surprised at this as I thought they were quality pistols.

FWIW, I've got about 2000 rounds through my Kimber, and I've only ever cleaned it once. That was about 1500 rounds ago...
Mine hates TC type bullets, but eats ball and hollow points without hesitation.

I wanted one, so I got an STI Trojan, I also have a Remington-Rand. I like them both for different reasons.
There are people that will never buy one. What's the problem? Honestly, none.
