Does brass harden with age? Mixed answers.
Many of us have seen the cracked necks on loaded ammunition. I can't remember if one brand sticks out as the ones that crack. But, old CIL, Dominion brand 22 ammunition often bursts the case when fired. The case breaks right near the rim. Some 22 rifles allow a bit of gas to come back and tickle your cheek. Just ask Kamlooky how he likes my old ammo!
I first noticed this about 35 years ago, with Dominion ammo that couldn't have been more than about 25 years old. The rifle I had was annoying to shoot, with getting your cheek tickled with about every third shot. I had a 22 revolver that didn't allow any gas to come back, so I fired them in it.
I have 30-06 and 270, Dominion brand empties around, which I bought new nearly 50 years ago and they still reload normally.
I have 303 cordite loaded militaary ammo with an early 1940s date on it, making it nearly 70 years old. It looks perfectly normal and last I shot performed like new ammo.
I recently acquired some boxes of loaded 30-06 ammo that has an original price tag of 5 to 8 dollars on them. They were not made yesterday, but they look great and will certainly be used.
