Just like the title says does shimming the m14 gas system eliminated the need for unitizing? Is method better then the other or should i do both?

You should do both. Unitizing elimintaes movement between the gas system and the stock ferule, while shimming ensures the gas system and ferule are hard against the barrel shoulder when the gas plug is screwed in.

If I had to pick one, I would shim. Unitizing is a "nice to have" extra step that is less likely to shrink groups than shimming will IMHO.

If you are competing, the do both accurizing methods/steps. If you are shooting inside 300m casually or this M14 is your moose / bear gitter, then don't bother shimming! Save your energy and buy hunting bullets to practice with.

If you happen to be an accuracy buff on a budget, then by all means shim that gas cylinder assy just for tighter groups (a la Hungry Welfare style). :D Don't spend a lot of money on that $ 400 plus blaster!

That help you dispell any myths of what tweaks have to be done?
