I am just getting in to the action pistol games, and it's time to get something a little larger then my .22. I am looking for something w/ a 5" barrel, adjustable sights, clean looks, reliable, and affordable.

I have my eye on a Para 16-40 ltd but there is an awful lot of bad press about para... I'm not usually one to judge like that but so many say they've had nothing but problems from Para.

Guaranteed STI is going to be mentioned any minute here, but models like the rangemaster caught my eye, but seem scarce and almost $2k, Not sure if I like the trojan or not....

So this leads to the question in the title of this thread, I have heard all sorts of good things about Springfield armory for quality, fit/finish, and customer service but there does not seem to be an abundance of SA 1911 dealers up here, and I had a look on their site, I didn't see any other calibers other then .45 on there. Does SA make a target oriented 9mm or .40 that comes in at a reasonable price?

Cheers,

Derek

Check out Kimber 1911s, they come in 9mm, a few models.
Also, Bul IPSC model sold by Marstar is a very good gun and it's .40S&W.

STI Trojan, in stock in 9mm from Armco - (top of the page) $1299, have Gunnar check the trigger for you and you're good to go. It's unlikely that you'll get a Springfield with the kind of quality you'll get with STI for any kind of reasonable price. Also your STI won't need paperwork to cross the border and come back if there's an issue, I think STI has some of the best product support of any pistol sold here. If you've heard good things from Canadians about Springfields service, I'd be shocked.Their quality isn't what it used to be either. Incidently, the Trojan is a pretty straight forward 5" 1911 with Bomars (apart from the calibre-which is a preference) what's not to like?

FYI - no I don't currently own one (an STI), have never owned one, and have no immediate plans to buy one, but based on having fired a couple and having seen a few in use, they are the logical choice. I have owned a Springer, and the only one I would ever consider buying based on that experience would be the FBI gun - not the replica, the $4000 dollar custom shop gun. I wouldn't bother with a production line gun from them if warranty is important to you.

I've seen and shot a 9mm Trojan that has been a steady use range pig for quite a while now. It's seen many, many thousands of rounds through it and it's holding up well and still shoots like the sights are radar guided. Yeah, it's a little more money but it's a helluva shootin' iron.

Remember that if you're aiming at IPSC that any 1911 or other single action automatically puts you into Standard. You can't shoot a 1911 or other SA only in Production. As long as that isn't an issue then go for the gusto.

I've tried to contact Springfield Armory Inc. to find out where - in Canada - I can get service for their products. The receptionist says she cannot answer that question and instead connects you to a line that goes to voicemail, every time. I left a message, every time.

They don't call back.

Why anyone would buy anything from such a company is beyond me.

I have had the Target Master and Trojan and to my great surprise, I'd take the Trojan any day.

This is one accurate handgun... Go for the trojan. You won't regret it. And Gunnar's triggers are the best...

Thanks for the input so far gents, keep it coming. Ok, as I expected, lots of love for the STI Trojan, your comments and opinions are making me take a hard look at it.

Looks like SA might be out due to lack of sales and service for us canadians.

Does no one on here have warm and fuzz feelings about the Para 16-40? Is it all bad news with their firearms?

Cheers,

Derek

I had a Springfield target model in 9MM...let it slip though my hands...great trigger...very accurate...can't comment on Springfield service in Canada.
Also have had both a Trojan and a Kimber in 9MM as well ...both excellent shooters.
As noted in the majority of post on this...can't go wrong with an STI.
Gunnar will set you up...and look after you as well.
What's not to like?!

Regarding Para...

I have a LTC in 9mm and I must say I am impressed with the quality so far. Good accuracy, good barrel. It is not what you're looking for in therms of accuracy because of the shorter barrel and unajustable sights but it is my first Para and I like it. Won't be keeping it for long though. I'm waiting for a package from Gunnar and as soon as I receive my "custom Trojan... bebye LTC !

Anyway, good luck hunting for your next addiction...
