Does the 300 win mag count as close range thumper?

All about bullet selection I would say. The cartridge is incredibly versatile and useful across a broad range of game, and target situations. Curtailment of the best “all around” cartridges available if you shoot it well.

If you are hunting in a situation where the likelihood of a short range “thump” may be necessary then selecting a bullet/load combo appropriate for the task will fill the need. Selecting a light for caliber rapid expansion bullet will leave a guy disappointed and yet not animals will have been shot with same 300Win.

A nice heavy round nose around 220-250 grains, in a 2.5 inch magnum, maybe something that would perform well in a 20 inch barrel. If only there was an option like this

The 165 copper offerings don't make it into the thumper category? They say with copper you can downsize 1-2 weight levels for same level of performance which would mean a 180-200GR lead equivalent...

Would make it more a penetrator then a thumper...which could be argued is a kind of thumping.
