Does the 338/358 offer any practical advantage over 308?

I bought a crate of 158 RN cast for my .358's... they are a lot of fun as plinker/dispatch loads... and cheap to shoot.

For those you love their 358 wins. What's your favorite barrel length and contour?

Personally like the .358 in shorter, handy barrel lengths... I have 16.5", 18.5" and 20" lengths... 20" in a bolt action is a good compromise between length and handling. Prefer a medium-light contour, #3ish...

I'm dreaming of a BLR takedown laminate stainless in 358 win topped with a 2 -7x scope. Thought I'd hit the jackpot when I saw one listed at Grouse Rivers website, only to find out its out of stock.

I had a Savage 99 in 358 years ago and I think it had a 24 " barrel.
My Ruger Frontier has a 16.5" barrel and I really like it, ideal length for hunting in the timber or out of a truck and great to carry on the quad. Accuracy is better than I anticipated for a stubby rifle..

I hear tell that a .358 is so loud that even if you miss, the animal will be so dazed and confused that you will have time to run over and club it to death with the butt.

I thought that was the 338.
I recall reading of a Guide in Montana who packed a No. 1 in 375 H & H. Well worn saddle gun; upon being asked why he packed the 'Big stick', he replied (something along the lines of...) "It's for finishing off the poorly shot animals that his clients shot. 338's are a handful and cause flinches = gut shot animals"

I'm a smallish guy and have a rem 700, mcmillan stocked, 8lbs .338WM and I don't know why people complain about the recoil.... Maybe they are usin them to punch paper?
I also have a .338federal and it's not much different on the shoulder VS a 180gr .308.
Is it just me or are folks gettin a lil soft these days LOL

I'd go .358 with a ghost ring site, and a .308 scoped. Problem solved. I hate magnums. Unless they are in .22
