Does the Hornady #9 Manual have 500 smith and wesson data?

I would assume Hornady has 500 S&W data since they make bullets for it. I do like the Lyman manual though as it includes some cast loads as well and includes their recommended target loads. I personally have been sticking with the VV N110 powder for it. At the moment, I have 2 different loads I'm running.

Lyman cast 375 grain bullets - N110 @ 31.5 grains with Remington 9.5m or Federal LPM primers
Hornady XTP Mag 350 grain bullets - N110 @ 34.3 grains with Remington 9.5m primers

This loads are not minimum but they aren't maximum either. Lyman generally recommends the minimum load with N110 as their target loads, but I didn't like how much gas was getting around the sides of the brass. A little more powder and things have improved a bit.

Where did you get the 700 grain mold? I'm wanting to put together some novelty loads with 700 grains... :)

the guy who i bought my gun from sold his second 500 and is selling his molds for it. so i grabbed the 700 gr mold and a 4 cavity mold that does 4 weights (440,540,590,640) group buy was here, http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?138551-NOE-503-Ross-Multi-Weight-WFN but over.

he may still have some for sale, but i don't think any more 700gr molds.

what are you wanting to load? i mostly do 440gr, 550gr, 575gr, 600gr, 650gr, 700gr. though i only got some molds for the last 2 recently.

Thanks, looking for different powders, I read the John Ross stuff pretty cool using rifle powder, thats the info I would like to get, rifle powders I usually have lots of on hand, but I find it very hard to get H110 and win 296 locally, I can pretty much forget some of the other powders listed never ever seen them locally.. I am loading the 300 hornady, the 400 sierra and the 500 hornady in limited numbers, most of my loads are with the 440 cast, fully dressed they weigh in at 456 grains..

Powders I use the most are h110, Lil gun (gives the most recoil to me), 4227(i need more of this!), trailboss.

Other ones I've tried are 2400, 4198, tightgroup (but I will only use trailboss for light loads now) I thought there was more but that's all.

The best one seems to be 4759, but I haven't found any yet. I should just but a couple of 8lb jugs.

With the help of 69daytona on cast boolits I worked up a load for 2400.

When I had my 500 S&W, I used full cases of IMR4198 and BLC-(2) for bullets weighing from 400 right up to 700 grs.

I quite buying new reloading manuals some time ago. Just print out the data i need from Hodgon or other powder manu site. Bloody books out dated way to soon with new powders and bullets coming out.

A full case of any powder as slow or slower than H4198 can be used right up to the heaviest bullet - even the 700 gr.

I don't list starting loads, but I wouldn't go any lower than 80% of the full case. I did not try H335, but did use WC-735 which is a bit faster. A full case of H335 would be fine, even with the 700 gr.

Here are some loads I used in my NEF Handi-Rifle in 500 S&W with the MiHec 700gr:

OAL 2.575"

IMR4198 - 40.0 grs (full) - 1450 fps
WC-735 (a surplus ball powder a bit faster than H335) - 50.0 grs (slightly compressed) - 1550 fps
BLC-(2) - 48.0 grs (full) - 1200 fps

The 1550 fps load was PAINFUL

have you tried lilgun? how does that compare pain wise? it seems to be the most "painful" powder i have used (lilgun, h110, 4227, 4198, trailboss, 2400)

So far I have only used H110 and trail boss, no other suitable powders to be had locally so I am trying to work loads with powders I have on hand, Next time I do a higginsons order I'll have to stock up on H110 or 296 or something..

The "pain" in that load is not from the powder used, but the recoil from a 700 gr bullet being pushed 1550 fps from a light gun.

I used Lil'gun and H110 like everyone else, and while they can make some very stout loads, you won't get quite the MV you will from 4198 and WC-735 with the heavier bullets. My personal favourite was BLC-(2) - it was a pleasant, accurate, moderate pressure load.
