Does this barrel need re-crowning?

My '52 Tula...

Thinking about re-crowning this myself ... but still gotta read up on how to do that properly with hand tools. Shoots about 5-7" groups at 200M... but it's pretty inconsistent at that range. I'm not too sure if that brown ring is rust, because in real life it doesn't show up as brown.

If it's shooting that well there can't be that much wrong with the crown.

Those scratches on it don't make a difference?

The only part that matters is where the bullet itself make contact with the barrel. The face can be scratched, as long as it doesn't touch the interior of the barrel and where it interfaces with the crown. You could try the brass screw head and some valve lapping compound. It wouldn't need much, nor should it. You need it concentric, even and square to the face.

sounds like you have no muzzle crown issues at all. any SKS would be proud to do groups like that. from the pics, your crown looks ok too.

you can always DIY a new crown and see if you can improve on the groups.

Hmm.. I dunno. I guess I want it to look good too.
And hey, if it'll improve the groups, then why not?
But since you guys are saying the crown looks fine... then it probably is. What do you think Curtton?

He already said.

6" groups at 200 is going to hit a guy, exactly what the rifle was designed for, no more, no less. If it did 6" at 50 yards there would be a problem.

It looks very similar to the crown on mine, I have not done anything about that, but i don't like those pits or whatever they are. He is referring to pits or gouges or whatever they are in his actual bore, not the dents on the crown.

When you get 8 inch groups at 20 yards, then it needs re-crowning.

I would be happy with 5 inches at 100 meters!
The bore looks good, as does the crown.
You're good to go!
Get some 00 steel wool and polish off the surface rust if it bothers you.
