Does This Look Like Pitting?

OP says he'll clean with wipeout, didn't dispute carbon/copper, so I'll go with porpoise's opinion. Looks about like my SKS after a 'fair' cleaning. I need a new brush :rolleyes: !! Maybe so does the OP ??
OP - I use Boretech C-9 for Carbon solvent in my SKS, with a brass brush while the bore is still wet. Seems to work better than paste on carbon for me. I've been using the 'scope a couple years and it is discouraging when you spend a 1/2 hour and it doesn't look much better. Then there are those that say don't clean until accuracy goes to h---. I feel better with a clean gun ^O^

AND BTW to those with probs with P-bucket, BTDT and I've been using Postimage ever since - for several years with NO probs.
 
I use two borescopes. First one I ordered was for a PC. Second one works with an iPad or iPhone.

At risk of offending anyone, I'll say that I think borescopes are a little bit like digital cameras, digital books, audio books, bluetooth, etc. Just takes a while to get used to the technology and to appreciate the usefulness. I am well into the "old guy" crowd, but I use all the modern digital stuff that I can make use of.

I think, though, this is example, like for instance, of someone buying a cleaning product that promised the moon, and bore scope now gets a view at what the results really were - so may or may not actually affect groups on target, but sure can see how it is disappointing if you totally bought into the sale pitch for the cleaner. Does not make sense to see chatter marks in a barrel delivering 3/4MOA groups at 200 yards, but it happens - just a "shocking" reality for some to get to actually see what is in there - what matters and what does not. Not at all to say that very high end barrels, ammo, actions, etc. can not squeeze out extra-ordinary perfomance - but usually do not buy that stuff in a box from a store... Then get to see how a simple, single ding at the muzzle can undo all of the other good stuff.
 
OP,
Slip bore specific "O" rings around your bore scope mirror to have a better focus.

Lap the bore w/ 400 grit silicon carbide lapping compound.
Let the rod/jag/patch tell the tale.
Follow w/ solvent & dry patched

Shoot

Repeat as necessary.

JB's paste will give you tennis elbow before you get that roucgh/broached grooves clean.
 
Meh. I'll go with "No, it is not pitting".

If it was pitting, it would be apparent on the smooth surfaces as well as the rough areas. That looks to me like a cut made with a dull tool.

Looks like they were not having their 'best' roll out the door at the time it was made.

Take that as you may, but how it shoots, should matter more than what it looks like.

As per the other posters, a scope is a great tool, if you understand the stuff you are seeing, otherwise it'll just cause you to worry about stuff you didn't need to.

Check out the Leade area of the bores on various rifles that either are known to shoot well or not. You pretty much need to educate yourself on what is actually happening in there before you lose a bunch of sleep over stuff that isn't making that much difference in the end.
 
Thanks for the responses everyone! I apologize that I have not been following the thread closely this week, I have been working out of town and just got home today.

I'm relieved that the general consensus is that it is not pitting. However it is quite disappointing that it could be a manufacturing defect as this is a fairly expensive high quality rifle whos previous owner described it as having a low round count.

But I agree with the posters who said to see how it shoots and go from there.

Does a rifle like this still have the potential to shoot decently or should I look into getting gun smithing done and possibly a new barrel?


I also agree with the posters who say no bore scope = better night sleep haha!

I will try and clean it over the weekend and report back how it looks.

I have seen a barrel very badly pitted from the chamber to the crown that shot consistently under an inch... it was a Browning Bar...

A bore scope is great I wouldn't want to be without mine. I don't see defect I see dirty barrel I could be wrong but that photo wouldn't scare me at all

A Browning BAR shooting consistently under an inch with an excellent bore is rather rare IMHO.

Civilian or Military?
 
Ok so an update. I gave it what I would consider a good cleaning. I first soaked the bore with WIPEOUT and let it sit for a while. the initial patch came out fairly clean. I then used some JB Bore Paste and followed up with patches until clean. I then ran several patches saturated with Butches Bore Shine down the bore and followed up with dry patches until clean(ish).

Here are the post clean bore scope pics. Not much better, if anything its gotten worse.

Does that look like rust to you? Also there is some JB Bore Paste in the gas hole, is there any way to remove this?

I was planning to shoot several dozen rounds down the bore tomorrow and see if the bore looks better afterword's.

Nothing worse than JB Bore Paste in your gas hole...

and I still see no pictures although there is a lot of text when I reply with quote that disappears when I post the reply...

I see the pics looks much better carbon is off the lands and where the metal has been uncovered in the grooves it looks perfect although your focus is not great. You got a Lotta work left to do and chemicals and patches won't do it. It might take forever with a bronze brush or two if you can't use the j.b. I find Birchwood Casey lead removal cloth on an undersizebrush so it's tight in the bore works well on problem fouling
