just wondering how many of you have a scope that actually cost more then the rifle it's mounted on (excluding base/rings). I just bought an XL7 and am pondering either a Bushnell Elite 3200 or an Elite 4200 (just the basic models)...one is half the price, the other is 3/4's the price.

Both my rifles have scopes that are near double the price of gun....it makes world of difference for me....crappy optics give me nausea

the average price of my riflescopes is probably $500 (mainly Leupold VXII's). Avg price of the rifles is probably $1200. So I voted gods no!

Used Winchester M70 in .308 was $250. Leupold rifleman 3-9x40 was $300.

Used Winchester M70 in .375 H+H $695. Used Leupold 6-18x50 was $580.

I'm not sure how to vote......I'm still pretty close to even!

I would rather put an expensive scope on a cheap gun than a cheap scope on an expensive gun. That being said all my guns cost more than my optics, but the point being that optics are the most important part of accuracy in my books.

My scopes are not worth more than my rifles, but then again I've got some expensive rifles. I think it is always prudent to purchase the best glass you can afford, but there is a point of diminishing returns. I wouldn't for example put a $3000 scope on a big game rifle, but I would put a $700 scope on a $300 rifle if it was the appropriate scope for the job at hand. It is better to have an expensive scope on a cheap rifle than it is to have a cheap scope on an expensive rifle.

VX-II's in QR mounts work just fine for me ... 3 different models on about half a dozen rifles - and all of the rifles, including a .22 RF cost more than the particular scopes on them - some a little more, some double and more.

Over the years I've tried Weaver, Lyman, Bushnell, Baush & Lomb, Redfield, Kahles, Zeiss and a couple of other models of Leupold. VX-II's on everything now - but I am considering a VX-III , 1.5-5x with illuminated reticle on my 35 Whelen. I feel it may be beneficial in that "first & last half hour" a lot times.

Case in point - The Stevens 200. So cheap that pretty much any quality scope will cost more than the rifle.

10/22

I love this story. A farmer friend wanted a 10/22 for his son, and he wanted the best scope there was, so naturally he puts a Swarovski on top. FS
