Gday everyone

What dog collars are camps running in Central/Eastern Ontario for running deer?

What’s your range, battery life, and ease of use.

Looking at the garmin Astro 900. Would like to run at least 2 collars.

I am open to options but would like a unit that has topo maps built in.

If you post pictures/ videos of use, you get bonus points.

Do yourself a favor and buy the American model of Garmin GPS. Alpha 200 etc.

These canadian models keep changing and Garmin does not support them after a few years.

I have a Garmin 320 (older version) and 5 dc40 collars for our hounds. I love it, I'm never worried about loosing my dog. Battery life is at least a couple days.

I use a Garmin Astro 900 for my Brittany, Archimedes (Archie for short), while bird hunting because he is so darn fast and has a habit of going on solo adventures for longer and further than I am comfortable.

I also use it when I let him run off leash just for fun. Like this morning, when he found a deer in the dark and decided to follow it through the snow for an hour and several kilometers as I tracked him on the GPS and ran behind. At the furthest point he was about 1.5 kms from me. The coolest thing is that when he finally decided to turn back I could watch him follow his own track back towards me. Today he ran 18 kms while I only did 10 kms. It's usually not so close, but he got put on a leash after I found him. I was also late for work, but it's nice to know he isn't lost even when he isn't in sight.

It's pretty easy to use. Battery life sucks on the AAs in the handheld, but you get a hunt or 3 out of one set as long as it doesn't accidentally get turned on in a bag and kill them. That happened twice to me. The collar lasts longer than the handheld.

No personal experience (not a field dog kind of guy, more sight-hound), but my brother and his spouse who are, say the same as above, if you want a decent system that just works, buy one on the American side, and take your chances that anyone ever cares enough to chase you down for abusing the RF spectrum.

On my second Garmin Astro 900. Use it for bird hunting on my GSP and when I take him for walks. First one had an antenna issue that I am trying to solve because Garmin will only replace the unit for 250 bucks US. They are also discontinued and there is little or no support from Garmin. Get the American one the Astro 430. Don't worry about using it in Canada. The difference between the Astro units and the Alpha units is that the Alpha units are track and train whereas the Astro is tracking only. I sometimes run an ecollar as well but not much anymore. There is so much stuff these units do I think I use maybe 10 percent. Basically show me where the dog is, where he is going or on point. OP if you have any more questions pm me.

Next time I bump in to the local cat hunter, I'll have to inquire about what he uses for his dogs. I do know that he has tracking on them, as he generally does not hump out into the bush until his dogs have parked somewhere and are indicating a treed cat.

Most upland bird guys and houndsman out this way running in thick or big country are running Garmin 550 pro Plus, or Alpha 300 units. They are "american" units but there are no issues up here using them. I have run them on our pointers for years all over north America without issues. Everyone I have seen have an issue is a Garmin Astro 900. I'd be hard pressed to give up my Garmin's if / when I ever need to replace them.
