I was just wondering if anyone here has some info on good hunting dog training information online? I am starting to train two dogs and know I will need some good info for both as one is a traditional gun dog (German Shorthaired pointer) and the other is a non hunting breed but showing a lot of potential (Blue Heeler). I am planning on using the GSP as an all around gun dog and the Heeler more for rabbits and flushing upland birds (no water work). Any info would be great.

Thanks

The two books I would recommend are;

(1) The Drahthaar Puppy Manual - A complete guide to surviving your first Deutsch-Drahthaar puppy experience and the German Breeding and Testing Systems. Fourth Edition by Roger Smith & Nancy Bohs

(2) The Armbruster Training Manual - From puppy to finished dog. By Leonard Armbruster. *a step by step manual*

Both of these can be bought from vdd-canada, a site dedicated to the German Wirehair Pointer, bred to German standards. This is their website. http://www.vdd-canada.ca/public/index.htm

You can also have a look at the two north american websites for the Kurzhaar, the same types of books might be available there.

Good luck with your dogs! I couldn't imagine hunting without one!

Cheers

P.S. Was your shorthair bred to German standards? If so, it's known as a Kurzhaar & you'll likely be training to pass the spring, fall & finished gun-dog tests and the above books are an exact fit.

I'll 2nd Jay's recommendations (I have a 'P' litter vom Willlowrock that I'm working on right now). I'll add "Training the Sporting Dog, 2nd Edition." It is the manual for the now defunct American Hunting Dog Club - a real jewel of a book.
