Well my pup is ready to be introduced to gun fire, I’m looking for a starters pistol that only shoots blanks/primers. Unfortunately I can’t find one anywhere. I’ve checked Cabela’s and all of the local firearms stores in Calgary. Any suggestions?

Play with him about quarter of a mile from a firing range. If he's a retriever, get him to retrieve. If pointer, hang a pigeon wing down wind in a bush about three feet away.
gun shyness is genetics, so the dog shouldn't be too afraid of the sound, the training is just to accustom the dog to the different sounds at different decibels.

Try an athletic sporting goods store, I got mine from the same place I got the equipment for the ball team I coached. Try to get one that uses 209 primers as they are far easier to obtain.

I used a Zinger 209 Pocket Shot when training my springer. Perfect little device that didn't look like a gun and was relatively cheap. It was manufactured by zinger winger, but I don't see it on their site any more. Might be worth contacting them. Got mine for $70.
A dollar store cap pistol is a good way to introduce a dog to gunfire. A fired shotgun hull with a new primer installed works good as well, and the primers can be swapped out with no special tooling. For a handier , long term training tool, shop around online, and find a starter pistol that uses shotgun primers. Canadian Gundog Supply has a selection in stock.

I introduce my pups while running them in the country, when they are busy chasing a butterfly or smelling poop I fire the pistol and ignore any action they show which has always been "what's that?" and continue on. Very soon they associate the noise with the run and all is good. Don't fire when close or when they are focused on you.

In the end, I ended up buying a traditions 209 starter pistol off another forrum. You could also try contacting your local gun dog club, they could probably hook you up!
12g and drop a bird out of the sky. My yellow lab was 6 months old. My son walked the lower trail into the water way. Our new buddy and I walked the upper trail. 50-60 ft from the water. My son dropped the duck. Cooper was so excited, and so lost at the same time. He new he was supposed to do something when the gun went off. He just didn’t have a clue what it was. Aiden called him down to the water. Took him a long time to get there. Disappearing into beaver slides and tunnels. Got out to the water and he was a black lab. Wish I could have got that one on camera.

I started off my lab when he was a pup by firing a .22 blank pistol behind my back when he would start eating. It didn't take long for him to ignore it because he was so focused on his food bowl. After that I would fire one once in a while when throwing a dummy. I took it slow and moved up from that to a .410 and on to a 12 gauge when we would go for walks jump shooting ducks over ponds. As soon as he retrieved his first duck he would get very exited when he heard shots or even when I took the shotgun out of the case.
