Just to prove that my moose jinx didn't spread to the next generation, Dogleg Jr. popped this guy on his first day, going out after school for the evening. Rifle was a Weatherby ultra light-weight I bought used off the EE, rebarrelled with a #2 Gaillard in .300 Win, and scoped with a Leupold 3.5-10 x 50 VXL3 with illuminated B&C. 168 TXS loaded over IMR4831 in Norma brass, and tweaked to the nth degree. Shot was 30 yards, offhand.

Congrats to jr. He's a beauty! Never seen a dead one not in a swamp. Lol jus kiddin, but it's nice to be able to back the truck up to them for sure. You have yourselves some fine eating there.

Love the trouble you went through to provide a gorgeous, expensive, finely tuned rifle all to have it shot at a distance that an H&R Handi-rifle with 12 gge. slugs would have dropped :p . Gotta hate when that happens!

Congrats to your kid on a fine Bull and to you for providing him with such neat toys!!!

For the record, this is one rifle that I reclaimed the second after the echo of the shots faded. The kid has a pattern of claiming everything he hunts with, thats how he got his .257 starter weatherby amoung other things. I just wanted him to have a little more horsepower for this job, and not have much adjustment to make from his own. He did shoot it out to 500 though.

Oh, he got the smile gene from his mother's side.:D

Way to go Dogleg Jr. How long did it take Caleb to quit smiling? A couple hours I'm sure.
Is the head getting mounted? It would be a great addition to that striped donkey you shot in Africa.:D

He hasn't stopped smileing yet, the outlook for tomorrow is unchanged.;) He duplicated my patented double muledeer with a muzzleloader trick this morning too, just to take the edge off.
We had a bit of drama with the bull when he got up at powderburn range. The bull lurched up and the boy nailed it again. His head went down and he flipped end for end when the antlers hit the dirt and the body kept moving. I never thought I'd see a moose standing on his head, its quite spectacular when you're only a few feet away. Where's a cameraman when you need one?

Good for him! But a 6.5 pound .300 Winchester!!?? Looks like Dad taught him how to shoot though. You should let him keep the .300. Bet I know who'll be going to Africa next time round.

It's closer to 8 pounds scoped, since the #2 Gaillard added a bit of weight. I did a lot of thinking before we settled on him useing this one. It's an easy transistion from his own Mark V in .257 Weatherby, and in the end we went with the familar. He shot it out to 500 at my range, not that I'd let him shoot nearly that distance at game.
