My brother had a scare a couple of weeks ago when his dog got in a tussle with a skunk and got bit on the paws and of course sprayed . He phoned me to find out what to use to get the smell off and I mentioned some home products to begin with and suggested he go to town and get some skunk-off from his vet.
He phones me an hour later and tells me the vet wants to put down his dog since it was bit by a possibly rabid animal. I had my wife phone our vet and he basically said WTF and gave us a number of another vet near my brother. My brother took her in and got a booster for her and sent the skunk away for testing keeping his dog in a shed till the results came back, which were negative.
I talked to our vet again and he said some of the old school vets put dogs down as a matter of course with possible rabies exposure but he said there is no reason to if they're vaccinated. I had this same old vet stitch up a dog of mine a few years back when it got cut on barbed wire but I think I'll drive another 1/2 hour to the nearby town if needs arise.
My younger dog has already been sprayed but he seemed to dislike the result and hasn't been nailed since.
