Yappy Jack Russell Terriers seem to be real good for attracting bears.

Indeed! :D

And fellow dog trainers used to nickname them Jack Russle terrorists, for the ####e they often caused at dog parks. :D

Great little dogs if you have the terrier owner Gene, which is a very patient one.

Another great hunting terrier is the German Jager Terrier...which in spite of it's Jack Russel size will even run down large boar.

One thing to watch about terriers...their drive can often get them in over their owners heads...esp' true with Pitties.

Also watch where you hunt with your dogs...some hunters have an twisted idea of shooting any dog they see in the bush.

... that's pretty much what happened down at Mactush Campground a few years back. At least a larger terrier might have got caught in his throat.

Well said Calum. There are some pretty amazing but hard to control charactaristics in most terriers.

Our second dog which came as an infant the same time that Rosco did at 1 yr was supposedly an Akida/Shep cross. Ya right. She's a year and a half now and only around 40 lbs. :D

She's quite neurotic, afraid of her shadow sometimes, but she's been right there with Rosco after bears, deer  and i'm pretty sure a cougar once already and her high pitched scream is something to behold! She seems to loose her fear when the chase is on. I'm thinking terrier in there big time. The jury's still out on how she'll turn out but she's spoiled rotton already so it don't matter much :)

You train a black lab--you hunt a hound.
I've been treeing bear for 30 years in this part of the province--bear dogs are born--not made. A good bear dog comes in any color or breed. I meant to say hound breed but thats not always true. I've seen lots of pound hounds and other peoples culls that made good dogs for me. That ain't got nothing to do with my abilities as a trainer. I can't train a hound grit--to bite a bear --nor can I train a dog to bark up a tree. All I can do is take the dog hunting and cull real hard. Horshur knows what I'm talking about.
Diamonds are positively numerous compared to good bear hounds and a good dry ground cat hound is a very rare animal.

True alot of breeds will make a bear dog.But you want a bear dog that only does bear and not deer.Thats the tricky part. And a true bear dog will stay at the tree and hack away until you come to them.Alot of dogs get bored or stray away after a short while.

A good stike dog is few and far between. This evening My son went to feed our dogs and my strike dog was gone to doggy heaven.A SAD DAY 4 SURE.

And there's the only problem. They just don't live long enough. When your a dog person you see a lot pass on through life. Sorry to hear that captonion :(

I have hunted with some american bear hunters the last few years. I dont ever shoot because its their hunt, I just go a long for the experience.

They run 9 plot hounds, 5 one day 4 the next and so on. Watching these dogs run a 350lb boar to tree would remove any aspirations of anyone thinking of making their miniature yapper into a bear dog.

Last year was fun because they had lost a few dogs over the years to old age/cars and were replacing them with some pups. Those pups were getting the best training a hound can get by running with the big dogs for 2 weeks. It was keep up or get lost, and they did once. They were gone from a Tuesday morning to a Thursday afternoon the first week.

The trick they used to get bear started was a learning experience for me. The night previous to the hunt we drove around dropping eggs on the logging roads. I guess this gave the bears something to stand around, lick and leave scent. The next day we would drive out to said egg drops with the best dog of the bunch riding on the tailgate. She was the smallest dog of the bunch but obviously had a good nose and a hate on for bears.

If we happened to drive past an egg drop that a bear had visited the night before or early that morning she would spring off the tailgate yowling and howling. Now it was a panic to get the other dogs out of their boxes to join the chase before she got to far ahead and also so "Bell" wouldn't have a bear turn on her if the bear got brave.

Its quite the bit of hound music when they get going and tree one. A lot of the times the guys didnt even shoot the bears because once we located the treed bear no one had a clue how far we were from a road and packing a bear through Northern Ontario bush is probably not fun.

I will agree with the above statement. You cant train a hound to hunt. Luckily, usually you dont have to.

i was thinking of a pound hound casue i dont wanna fork over toomuch cash.

Keep your eyes on the classifieds and ask around. Lots of people think that their bluetic/walker/plott will make great house dogs (and some do) until they get sick of scouring the country side all night looking for the dog everytime it gets out. You could score a freebie no problem.
