New to hunting here.
Does anyone know if it is legal to use a dog for helping pack game meat out of the bush?

In BC, mainly go after black tail and black bear. Dog is a 2 year old 100lb Labrador x Leonberger.

I know domestic sheep, goats, camelids are banned because of diseases that would be passed onto wild sheep species and feral goat problems.
Hunting deer with dogs is illegal in BC. Only thinking of getting Pepper to help haul the already dead deer out of the bush.

I want to say yes. I want to say it was on the Meateater podcast where they talked to a guide who used two dogs as pack animals, and the guy was from the BC Rockies. This was a few years ago but I haven't heard of any rule changes that would have changed things.

I also can't recall ever seeing anything about it not being allowed in the regs/synopsis. I just searched for the word dog and nothing relevant to packing comes up, so I'd say yes you're good to go.

I want to say you can hunt deer with dogs too, they just can't be off-leash. From the synopsis:

Dogs » The use of dogs is permitted in the hunting of all game, but dogs must be on a leash when used to hunt deer, elk, moose, mountain sheep, mountain goat and caribou. Unleashed dogs may be used to hunt small game, lynx, bobcat, black bear, or cougar. Any person may train dogs by allowing them, under supervision, to pursue game birds from Aug 1- Apr 30. » It is unlawful to cause or allow dogs to pursue furbearers under the authority of a trapping licence

Dogs can be used while hunting deer , blk bear as long as they are on a leash....
Read the regs and then read them again.

I hunted for 7 years with my rottwieller at my side. He came on nearly every hunt no matter where I travelled in BC.
He was also my trusty companion when I solo hunted blacktail in the fall and was fantastic in the bush. I didn't use him as a pack animal due to the terrain and we drag our deer out of there whole so as to not leave gut piles in the spot. His compliment to my hunts were his senses and body language and if we had the wind , he always knew when animals were coming in close.
I miss that dog. The rotti we have now is a princess and wouldn't dare go out in the rain for fear of getting her fur wet , let alone go in the bush hunting LOL She behaves when the deer come in the yard and her attention turns to my commands which is good. She runs off the bears though and I've seen 2 big black bodies rippin across the yard many times.... we only have one dog LOL She is a big girl at 76 kilos but still, I hope a bear never stands it ground with her because she is gonna bring a fight.

Over the years I hunted with the one rotti, we met many CO's and none ever questioned me on how i used the dog but yes.... always a leash. Losing a dog would crush me so the leash is as much for the dogs benefit as it is for any other reason. They get excited and in unfamiliar places with wild things and smells , losing the dog in the bush if it races off after something would be my greatest fear. Some breeds are better in those scenarios but you never know. In my case , a 76 kilo rotti like my Lucy, could easily take down a deer if she got the jump on it in the yard.... which could happen if she wasn't at least trained for how to behave when they jump the fences into her domain. They shoot dogs here that run down deer so anywhere outside her fences she is leashed.

In Ontario you have to get a licence for the dog to hunt. Not sure how it goes out west, but here, I’d guess packing meat out would be considered “hunting” as well.

I been hunting with a pack dog(s) fora number of years, a good trained dog makes a hell’ova partner.

If you’re in the market for a dog pack, Iv had great luck with the ruffwear palisades.

Illegal in Saskatchewan, for no good reason. We're trying to get that changed. Being able to use leashed dogs for following up and finding wounded big game would help reduce the number of wounded and lost animals. Reduce unnecessary suffering and waste. And the dogs could be available to help pack out too.

I've never done it for deer but I had my mastiff with me when I shot a coyote once. She carried it across the field for me. I'm sure if I put a harness on her she could pull a sled easy.
