My Vizsla obviously loves to hunt and run run run...

The problem is...his paws get so damn sore every single time I walk him for more than 15 minutes. Pads bleed, raw chaffing between toes and nasty sores develop between toes...puss, cysts, you name it. His paws are bad.

I am interested in learning more about the following products and am ready to purchase all of it from Canadian Gun Dog Supply but would first like to hear your thoughts on the following items....Do they work? What do they do?:
- Mushers Secret
- Tuf-foot
- EMT Gel
- Lewis Dog Boots

Everyone on here in the past has recommended EMT gel....but is it really much better than high end polysporin?...I'm asking, I don't know.

Mushers Secret sounds promising, anyone have experience with it?

Tuf-foot looks like it has been around for awhile...does it work?

Lewis Dog Boots...has anyone used them?

I used Happy Jack Pad Kote on the odd one that was a tenderfoot back when I ran dogs. You paint it on and it toughens the pad.Kinda builds a callus.
Not sure if it's even available any more...
Make sure the hair on the foot isn't too long, particularly the hair between the toes.If it picks stuff up it's like having a stone in your boot.
Had 2 trim a couple on a regular basis because balls of ice would lame them.

That said boots might be the answer, although they're a pain in the arse!

I've seen the Happy Jack online, it's still available, I'll think about that as well....will also take a look at hair between toes.

Boots are a pain and I have been putting them off for 2 years now...I am desperate, the dog needs to hunt...he loves it, will try anything!

Been through the vet many times, he had thought food allergy....tried 7 different types and nothing changed, feet always flare after running, thought for sure it was a seasonal allergy but it is continuing past spring and summer now...

Needed some relief for summer vacation so we had the vet give him a predisone injection, worked wonders for 4 weeks, did it one more time and again it was a miracle for the 4 weeks.....don't want him on the dope long term. The drug cleared everything up quick and prevented all flare ups, no problems at all.

I do think it is genetic/medical....weak immune system or something, he was the runt and not strong at birth.

But I am up for trying anything at this point, searching for help.

So far, the high end anti-bacterial polysporin seems to work the best, helps healing and prevents the nasty infections/boils/puss.

Is it possible he's getting into something that's causing it? First thing that I thought of was salt from walks, but it's not that time of year...

Very weird that his feet get messed up without LOTS of running.

Cheers
Jay

It starts sore like chaffing and then becomes quickly infected and painful.

It is not salt or fertilizer or chemicals. I believe it is tender feet that chaf, if we don't clean him up really good immediately he is a nightmare, if we clean him up and apply anit-bacterial polysporin he recovers quicker. Moisture between the toes spreads infection like wildfire...some ointments make it worse.

Hard to explain, but while he hunts he is so damn happy, I can see him limp at times but his adrenalin takes over and he is a beast, when he gets home his feet bleed and he is bed ridden...

It seems pretty close to this (interdigital pyoderma).....anyone have knowledge of this?:

One of the most common foot problems is interdigital pyoderma -- infections between the toes. Unless the underlying infection can be controlled, there is a strong likelihood of return of the cyst or development of a similar cyst in another location on the feet. Allergies and immune mediated disease can be the initiating causes of interdigital pyoderma. Often, if this is the case, there will be other skin disease or chronic ear infections in conjunction with the foot problems.

very informative as to courses of action and treatment.
this-
Chronic, recurrent interdigital furunculosis is most often caused by inappropriate antibiotic therapy (too short, wrong drug),
caught my eye as they recommend antibiotics but also state that-
Interdigital furuncles respond best to a combination of topical and systemic therapy. Oxacillin or cephalexin at 20 or 30 mg/kg, PO, t.i.d., is recommended for 3-4 wk of initial therapy. However, because the lesions are pyogranulomatous, it may be difficult for antibiotics to penetrate them; therefore, 3-8 wk of systemic antibiotic therapy may be required for the lesions to resolve completely.
polysporin being a topical antibiotic may quell the symptom but fail to cure the condition.

Got him on 24 days of cephalexin and am trying a Hypoallergenic dog food. Also giving him fish oil, a zinc tablet and colostrum to try to boost his immune system. Ordered Lewis Dog Boots for hunting. We'll see how it goes, but yes...it does appear to be interdigitial pyoderma...brought on by allergies...possibly a number of allergies. Hope to strengthen his immune system as well as try to discover what his allergies are...this is difficult, but we are trying...
