Probably one of those "everybody wonders but is too ashamed to ask" type of things but ..... Is the mag tube functionnal on these things or has it been "deactivated" in some way to make room for the detatchable magazine setup ?

I don't believe there are any shell latches in this gun, so it won't do anything but hold up the forend.

It would make a nifty place for a built in flashlight!!!!

I was thinking the same thing about most pump shotguns anyway as it wouldn't take much to have a hollowed out mag cap so you could mount a light or a laser in it and not reduce capacity that much, especially if it is in a mag extension anyway...hmmm methinks a project is in order.

If a flashlight or freakin' laser can be inserted into the tube it just might be the tipping point on wether to purchase one or not..... hmmmm.

In other words any 870 can be retrofitted to a detachable mag setup with very little work ?

I'm no expert but, I think it would take some effort involving some machining and welding. But yeah I guess it's as doable as adding a removable magazine to a REM 700. I imagine it would probably be cheaper and easier to just buy a grizzly mag unless you're looking for a project to do:)

If all it required was "very little work" someone would be selling D.I.Y. box mag conversion kits for 870's.

First off the receiver of the Grizzly MAG is machined differently than an 870, the trigger group is different and the magazine housing has been brazed on to the receiver. The bolt carrier is also different and the "mag" tube is different (it has a slot cut into it on the top).

Overall it would be much cheaper and easier to buy a Grizzly MAG rather than trying to convert an 870.

I like the idea of a flashlight inside the mag tube, there is certainly lots of room to work with in there.

Hmm, more work than I realised. Visually it looks (to me) like a standard 870 minus the shell lifter and an external sheet-metal "mag well" added, guess I was wrong.

I'm pretty sure there was a conversion kit for the 870. I believe there is also one for the 590.

IIRC, neither was extremely reliable and the magazines were extremely expensive.
