Hey everyone!
I'm looking into getting a compact shotgun for backpacking/survivalism.
Never shot a 410 before but from what EVERYONE has told me you simply cannot rely upon it even for rabbits and whatnot, otherwise I'd just pick up a Boito Hiker.
I like the idea of a short single barrel 12G Like what Dominion arms offers but everywhere I go they are out of stock! does anyone know where I can get one of these new? or maybe an equally small alternative?

...Or any votes to just get the tiny 410 and try not to miss? lol

You may want to consider a breakdown gun. A savage 24 is an excellent choice. Get the 22lr over 20 guage and carry an assortment of slugs and shot. You can take whatever game strikes your fancy. I saw one in the EE for 450.

All my camping/backpacking gets done in the great B.C. wilderness, all over the province really. As for potential threats I worry more about cougars than anything but black bears are out n about too and I'm not a huge guy. (not that it really matters against a cougar)

Tbrwlf I actually hadn't considered a combo gun before, I just assumed that with the extra barrel it would mean extra weight for just a bit more utility and weight is a real issue with all the other gear I lug around.
I'm told the DA 12G weighs in at about 5.5 lbs, that's not too bad but if a 20G combo gun could stay within that range of weight I'd seriously look into it. :)

I wouldnt get a 410 if i were you. I think its going to leave you wanting more gun in certain situations and I think the little extra weight of the 12 gauge would be well worth it. Thats my opinion anyways FWIW.

410's are for fun and at best attacking squirrels at close quarter. :p
I've got the Boito Backpacker and its fun but not much for what you need it for. Basically a bear banger.
Try a Maverick 88 pump shotgun with a folding stock. Reasonably priced, very reliable and very effective.

your "everyone" is on glue. I've killed 100's of rabbits, Hare, grouse and Squirrel with a 410. on the run and on the wing. hell, I know a guy that loaded bismuth and took down ducks cleanly with his.

Well I got an opportunity yesterday to fire my friend's 410. Don't remember what he called it but it seemed like a nice sturdy little gun, though quite small and light. Took some getting used to.
I have to say I really can't understand the bashing of this bore I've often heard in my research, the one I tried worked just fine at less than 30 yards or so, beyond that it got hard to hit every time but still better than I expected.

Having said all that, I just simply feel better with a bigger shot. I started with a 12 gauge and while I'd consider myself a beginner shooter I'm thinking it will just be a better gun for me and my purposes. ...cheaper ammo helps too.

Thanks to all who posted on my thread and if you think there's anything else I should know allong the 12G route I'm all ears. :)

Dominion Arms Grizzly , or the Norinco 97-1 (I have one of these). I also just chopped down an old Sears (Cooey 840) single barrel in 12 guage as a "tent trailer" gun, very light, and will handle 3 inch slugs with no problems. The Norinco cost me about $260, and the Sears was $50 at a gun show.

IMHO a 12 gauge shotgun, with a heavy slug, is the #1 choice for self defense in the wilderness with short .358 Winchester, 350 Remington Magnum or 45.70 rifle being a close second.

For survival situations however, I believe a .22 magnum bolt action, open sighted, rifle is a much better choice. Weight is a major concern in survival situations. Shotgun and centerfire rifle ammo is heavy and bulky. The weight of 25 12 gauge shotshells (or 40 centerfire cartridges) will be the same as, or close to, that of 300 rounds of .22 magnum.

Mossberg 500 JIC II...

hang on, have a look at a couple H&R models - the Survivor and the Tamer. there's an active thread open on the 2 of them. these are true backpack type guns. not really designed for the range, they're compact and easy to break down. different guages available 410 or 20 ga on the Tamer and 410 with 45 Colt i believe on the Survivor.
the op had said something lightweight and "just in case"....well there's 2 great choices at about 6lbs.

just my 2 pennies

The problem with the .410 is the pattern. Shoot it at paper at 20 yards and compare the pattern to other gauges (28, 20, 16, 12) and I think you will see that there are serious holes in the .410 pattern.

The .410 obviously has it's supporters but if you want 1 gun and 1 gun only do do what YOU have stated you need it to do then the 12 is probably the best answer to your question. Sounds like you are coming to this conclusion yourself.

imho
22mag great round for hunting and such
410 fun at the range and small game
against anything that can kill you lets not talk odds
get a 12 pump and just know your covered not like you may get a second shot
happy trails

I've got a Norinco JW-2000. Casual carry, only worried about self defense, it works for me. It fits in the side pocket of my backpack, and I leave it loaded, safety on and hammers not cocked. I figure I'll probably only have time to get off two shots anyways, if that, and I can dump both barrels at once if it come down to it...

I bought a Rossi Matched Pair in 20ga/.17HMR for more of a survival/carry situation. It's a little heavy between the two barrels, but I think it offers a reasonable compromise everything considered. Good luck finding one though, they seem to be rare.

So what shotgun do you guys recommend for zombie posts as this one is over 2 years old and the original poster hasn't been on cgn for a year now. Ps, i recommend an h&r tamer in 20 gauge.:)
