dominion primers

Ive shot off about 5K of them, and generally Im pretty happy. They are a bit hard(almost like CCIs)and my Tanfoglio stock with a 13lb mainspring doesnt like them, lots of misfires. No problems with my 1911 38 super(17lb spring)or sig 226 with factory spring. Not a single misfire attributable to other than a soft mainspring. And the price is right considering how ridiculous the US primer prices have become.

I've had no problems with stock hammer springs in the CZ Shadow or the CZ Tac Sport. Also no problem with S&W 929 again with stock hammer spring.
Another shooter at the club had troubles igniting them with his S&W 625 and lighter mainspring.

209 are in the next shipment later this year

Russian powder offers no savings

All depends on embargo status

Any magnum small pistol/rifle available at the source?

I've used a few tens of thousands of these. Any issues I have had are so statistically insignificant that I can't even recall one.
Less than 3 cents for a dominion primer versus almost 5 cents in the LGS? That adds up, especially with the stupid powder prices these days.

they are way softer than CCI... trust me, i ended up crushing about 300 of them by accident on my 650... thats a lot of bullet pulling... on the bright side, i learned how easily primers are supposed to seat... #facepalm

I do find they take less push on the lever to seat them on my XL 650 then CCI primers. Which handgun are you shooting them with and how are they performing for you? Even though the CCI primers require a little more effort to seat, I've not had any failures with them for ~1500 rounds in my GP X-Calibur

I've got a 9mm striker fired pistol and .357mag SAA that I plan on reloading for very soon and am considering using the Dominion small pistol primers (the .357mag calls for small pistol magnum primers but Canam does not have those). I've used the Dominion small and large rifle primers without any issues, so have confidence in Dominion brand primers based on that. I'm encouraged by Trazor's comment about the Dominions being softer (particularly for the striker pistol).

If anyone in the East or NorthEast area of the GTA has some Dominion small pistol primers, I'd like to buy a pack off you for trial before ordering a large quantity from Canam. PM me if you're willing. I'll also try Federal as other say these are soft primers as well.

I suppose four of us up here have shot at least 30K Dominion primers since they first became available and I suspect we are about to order more. Both Small and large pistol have never failed to go off in my pistols and revolvers (9MM, 40Cal, 38spl/357mag) as well as my 44 magm 45Colt and 45acp in large pistol. Unless they are priced the same as the Dominion I am afraid the US made primers can remain on the shelf. No reason to spend more for the same results.

I don't know where I got this from several years ago, but primer hardness (hard - soft) was listed as: CCI, Winchester, Remington, Federal.

:) Stuart

Lots of good posts here, thanks gents. Sevoman (post #42) suggests the Dominion primers rank up near the CCI's as far as hardness goes.

I have no qualms about Dominion primers except for the striker-fired pistol, so I would still like to buy a pack of the Dominion small pistol primers off someone in the East to Northeast GTA for trial, Oshawa would be ideal as I'll be there today and tomorrow if anyone is willing to sell one pack. PM me! Thanks.

Have you had issues with your striker fired pistols? I have four M&P's, 2 each in 9MM and 40 cal and the SPP primers have worked flawlessly in matches and practices. My Ruger GP-100 and 686 has gone bang every tme U pulled the trigger on them as well.

I picked up one of the Diamondback DB9FS. A 100 rounds of reloads went OK, but I recently bought a case of S&B and as far as I can tell am getting debris from the primers into the striker channel. Just this past week after I cleaned things out, the first 27 rounds worked fine then I started to get light strikes, likely from interference from the debris. I'm discussing this on the diamondback forum too. Some of the 'shards' have a definite crescent shape to them. I anticipate my issue is more related to the debris than to the hardness of the primers, but I'll eventually get around to reloading the S&B brass and was planning on using Dominion primers, but I want to try out a pack before ordering a case lot.

Do you swage the S&B primer pockets? If not they have a crimp of sorts and if you are getting light strikes it is more likely the primers are not seated deep enough. Do the rounds fire on the 2nd strike? I have been cursed with a bunch of 38spl S&B brass and I have swagged the pockets out and still run into tight pockets. Personally I send any 9mm S&B brass I pick up at the range to the recycle bin. I suspect what maybe happening if you are finding copper flakes either on your press ir elsewhere they are from the edge of the primer as you force seat the primer into a very tight primer pocket or from the edge of the pocket itself. It is the brass not the primers you are having problems with.

Hmmm... good question. I don't think I've tried Dominion-primed ammo in my SR9 yet.

Just a quick update. Ryan at CanadaAmmo reached out to me and I'll work with him on my primer problem. I hadn't contacted him yet as I'm new to reloading, and wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything that would cause or exacerbate the problem. He's a classy guy, and proves once again why he's one of my favorite suppliers! I'm still going to run more test batches with some of the suggestions I've received though.
