I know these kits aren't exactly growing on trees but guys do get their hands on them from time to time.
The kit I used is the one made by Sparrowhawk and while it may be simple to install on a Springfield, it was a pita on my Polytech. So in order to prevent future frustration here's how to get it to fit.
While their site does feature some good instructions (http://www.sparrowhawkm14.com/id7.html) once I started mocking this up it became clear there was no way in hell it would fit my poly's receiver as is.
In order to fit, the whole thing had to be extended 3mm. After much f**king around and measuring it ended up fitting perfectly. After securely screwing the base to a block of wood I carefully drilled off the back of the rivet holding the pieces together, beat out the old rivet end that remained stuck in the shaft lock (button) with a small punch and using a new 5/32 1/2" long rivet and 3 washers (part#61-9209-6) acquired from Can Tire, I riveted all the parts back together.

This setup does require the use of a GI oprod to work.
Apart from needing the spacers and a little filing on the base to get it to fit the stock recess properly I am happy with the kit. It is authentic and is made from real de-milled USGI parts.

Be sure to get it as far back as possible so it will clear the receiver and oprod.

Nice smooth operation nothing touches or drags anywhere.

The connector arm also seems to be keeping the short chinese connector lock from walking out but I most likely will still JB weld that area.

As real as it gets!! All that's left on this project now is the paint job on the stock using duracoat.
This baby has a TRW bolt and Oprod and a minty Winchester barrel. Thanks M14 Doc! Fine work putting her together for me!!;)
Also a big thanks to Hungry and everyone else who provided me with USGI parts for this build!!

what does it do?

It makes your M14 copy look cool, that's about it haha!:D

I find its a nicer way to fill that hole in the stock than fiberglass and it reminds me of better times before gun control nuts flew off the handle.

Now you can have the same look alike M1A (modified to look like an M14) that one of our celebrity (cannot mention his CGN handle... op security, JTF3 and all that ;) ) moderators provided for the filming of Blackhawk Down... crap! Did I just get my wires crossed with the Shooter movie filmed in BC with Mark Wahlberg?

Maybe I'm mixing up certain movie prop contractors in my old age....

I did take 2 pucks to my goalie helmet tonight at pickup hockey! ;)

Cheers,
Barney

How does the actual select-fire mechanism work - just trips the disconnector when the bolt comes into battery? I've seen pics of the individual components, but I haven't ever seen them assembled or working (obviously).

I suppose the knowledge is sort of useless since a guy can't build a working select-fire mechanism anyway, but I'm the kind of guy who likes to know how things work just for the sake of knowing!

Any experts want to chime in on this? Or have good resources that explain the process? Sorry for the hijack...

The last time I talked to Sparrowhawk he state that under no circumstance would he ship to Canada. You acquired yours how?

Nevermind about the auto sear workings - I found it in an old US Army FM from biggerhammer.net... It's what I suspected ;) Very, very simple - nice design, actually - much less "convoluted" than the racheting found on the 3-round count M16-type auto sears.

I find this stuff fascinating because it's such "unobtainium" for all of us up here in Kanuckistan.

All these parts are de-milled. They used to be usgi parts but not no more. The kit is basically an ornament. To answer your question, ship to ** address and pay with (FRAUD ALERT).

She looks GREAT Jeff. Was a pleasure putting her together for you But your finishing touches and selector have turned her into an authentic looking rig.
I have a couple selectors and perhaps will try and look at making these kits this side of the border.

I just love looking at that homemade dummy kit... I bought mine from Brownells. Thanks for that post and the great pictures. Nice grease job on the op rod track and bolt raceways. :D

I don't care that it's cosmetic only, that looks sweet!

Just got back from hockey myself. Why am I not surprised you are a goalie Barney? All 8 goalies in our league are real characters, you guys are a different breed.

the sear release has a little flange, and when rotated it trips the sear. Real m14's sears are wider to give the sear release something to grab onto
