Don't buy ammo that looks old (like I needed to post this).

So I went into some out of the way fishing supply place and noticed that they had some ammunition on the back shelves. I bought 1 of the only 2 bricks of AE .22lr ammunition they had (400 rounds) and noticed that the box was partially bleached from the sun (looked pink instead of red).

My spidey senses told me to just walk out, but whatever... anyway as expected there were about 5 rnds in each pack of 40 that didn't have enough "oomph" to fully cycle the bolt on my 10/22.

<sigh>

I managed to burn through the brick, but it wasn't as enjoyable having to clear jams every magazine. Never again :D

hey that happens on new stuff too- federal bricks had a problem a while back, but they're ok now- it's almost like you expect a few with 22 ( stupid rhyme)

One or two out of fifty, sure... one every mag is too many.

At least it's all gone.

I doubt the cause was being a few years old. Some ammo is just plain bad, no matter how old. I have boxes and bricks of 22's that are 30 or 40 years old and fire 100%, yet I have had new bricks with lots of duds.

Age doesn't matter as much as quality of manufacture and storage conditions.

Yea, I've noticed that every since federal changed the package design to the new blue theme, the .22 brick ammo is alot more dependable. Actually, I don't think I've got a single dud at all since the box was changed to blue where as when it was still white/black I'd expect 4~5 duds AT LEAST.

Interesting... it's the first time I had this experience with Federal stuff, usually it's been pretty good.

Hmmmm... might have to start a "best bang for the buck .22lr ammo" poll or something.

THanks for replies guys.
