It is now 3 am and ive just spent the last 3 hours getting my m305 bolt back together.

I had the bright idea to take my bolt apart. With btw was quite easy.

Putting it back together was something that would most weekend gunsmiths cry.

Anywas i got it back together and i thought i would share. There is no reason to take these apart and sould not be attepted withought proper reassembly tool. So DONT DO IT!!!!!!:ang
 
Oh just go buy a bolt disassembley tool. Lots of people say don't bother or use a .06 casing. Bought one from ebay and its one of the most useful M14 tools I own. Sure makes short work of disassembley when swapping bolts and checking headspace.
 
I've warned ya all at my M14 clinics not to do this!! :nest:

If you insist in cleaning the bolt, then aerosol brake cleaner is your friend. Let it try and / or use compressed air to blow out the perceived dirt.

I did it severals times to get used to that. Not hard at all, a 30-06 case is your friend:)

The 30-06 casing trick is great for disassembly.
For reassembly if you extractor spring is a little to long.(Where you cant drive your claw in without compressing it a bit), the case trick is useless.
 
the m305 ejector spring is waaaaayyyyy too long in that bolt.
a usgi spring is half the length.
very simple to do a usgi bolt.
so,change the ejector and spring and all will be good.
p.s. a garand extractor,plunger with spring,ejector with spring fits an m305 only the firing pin is different.

Agreed. I was having problems with brass getting jammed between my ARMS 18 and the receiver, so I knew some coils were going to have to come off of the extractor and ejector springs. Let's just say that the Brownell's tool was worth it's weight in gold.
 
The tool sure helps. I used one at a m14doc clinic and granted I needed a little hand holding to get it right it can make a pain in the ass job (for the unpracticed) alot simpler.
 
with mine i just chambered a 308 case to put pressure on the spring, used a dowel pin to hold it in place, took the bolt out, then pushed the ejector in place of the dowel pin. not so bad imo
 
Do you have to tear down the bolt during the initial clean to get all of the oil out? I've done this on all my milsurps to remove cosomoline, so I would assume the same logic applies???
 
OP sounds like me everytime I get it in my head to dissasemble a trigger group.
10x youtube videos later and it might be back together...

Good news is, you learned something and know more about your rifle now!
 
A 30-06 case works ok. to make it great, trim off the part of the case which would make contact with the extractor.

It becomes a real piece of cake then because you don't have to fight with the extractor claw against the casing rim.

The garand ejector and spring are not the same as the M305.
The other parts you mention are the same.

I have both,i'll strip both and see.

Put a punch in the vise & depress the detent. Then with a small flat head screwdriver the one used for watches push back the spring. Now with your thumb pop in the extractor.
Done!
