Don't EVER complain about how much a gun smith charges ! ! ! !

Trev, do NOT go there.... just.... DON'T..... I don't want to start thinking like that.......

:d

I'd still do this stuff even though it just doesn't make sense monetarily as I'm sure you would too. It doesn't have to make "sense". It does have to be something that makes us smile to do.

Of course I'm a hobbyist at all this. I'm sure I could not make a living at it. I take too long to do things because being a hobbyist half the time I'm learning part of the job as I go. What I have learned very well is to move slowly when faced with learning as I go so I can toss around options that avoid expensive mistakes. The stock repairs I'm doing at this point though are one of the times where I already knew most of what I had to do. But even on this job I learned a few tricks in regard to removing old gun oil from the wood so I could repair it.

Yeah, not being in this as a business, means I can make decisions that a business owner never would (if they wished to stay in business, anyway).

The odd project I take on for other people, I do so because the project interests me, and generally I could care less about any return.

Oh the voice of experience.
Go slow
Sometimes it is a hard lesson to learn.
For myself it's a labor of love

I have to say this, finding a good gunsmith is not easy. I thought a few times of opening up a shop here in rural Ontario, but considering insurance, bills, time and I have all the permits in place, no thanks.
I've made mistakes in the past and learned from them, but I'm just a hobby guy. I keep getting guys coming to my place searching for a smith because someone else has messed up their gun and despite me just being the local nobody, I've reverse engineered and repaired their firearm. I'm a bit testy at times too and have warned a few away because of bad ideas.
Truth is, it's time consuming and only a few appreciate the skill that his taken me a long time to learn. I'll still keep tinkering as I don't have the cash outlay for a full time shop and lately I'm back playing my bass guitars again. More satisfying :)
