Well after playing with loads for the .257 Weatherby for the last month and deciding on one, i went to the range to zero it today. After the first group i decided to zero it.
I did the adjustment and it sprayed all over the place. I then realized i forgot to tap my scope adjustment knobs. After doing that, two shots went right where i wanted them. I am glad it dawned on me to give the knobs a tap to set the crosshairs before i packed it in in disgust.

What kind of scope is it? If it's a leupold, send it back.. it's screwed!

I've never had to do that with a Leupold... be it turrets or standard coin slot, simply dial and fire away... always returns to zero when done, and THAT is the only way it should be!

It seems strange to have 3 shots go that astray... the only time I've seen an issue is on cheap scopes when a tap was not done (sometimes the reticle doesn't move)... but after the first shot it is "tapped" and has made the adjustment.

How many groups did you shoot with that load previously?

It almost looks like an erratic load to me, and the 5 shot group just worked out to have the last 2 shots touching.

I always shoot 4 or 5 groups and average them....surpising how many times a good groups gets fliers the second or third time around.

If indeed the scope simply needs a "tap" the second one would be with a 5lb sledge hammer if it were mine!

Its an Elite 3200. It shoots that first group all day long with a cool barrel. I have seen the same with Leupolds as well. Give the scope a tap to set the cross hairs.

................I wouldn't shoot a 5 shot group with my Weatherby mag. That barrel is hot after 3.

Yep, always good practice. Also helps to work your knobs to either end of their range a dozen times before zeroing.

huh-huhuh-huh-huhuhuh - I said 'work your knob' - huh-huhuh

I've seen guys do it.Personally I think its ridiculous.
Houligan was over a year or two ago at my pit to sight in a couple of rifles, one with a 3200 and the other a 4200 and they both tracked perfectly without any beating/tapping/ pounding.
I'm with 280 and Amphibious on this one.If you HAVE to do this,I'd be sending it back.
No way am I beating on my Leupolds.Maybe I am wrong but if it does take a shot to settle the hairs,so be it.

I don't think it's that strange...I think it was the shooter.;):p:p:p:D

Kidding aside, I am glad to see that 257W is working out for you. At what distance did you zero it at?

I have an aged Leupy that needs a couple wraps with my knuckle on either the windage or elevation dial after much adjustment before it 'settles in'. This is a common thing for older friction dials...

Mr 300 Ultra from my range idiots thread was tapping the scope tube with a shell after adjusting every shot. Didnt work for him :D
