Ok I have access to a 500m range that allows restricted rifles. I want to build a precision AR... in .260. I was thinking of getting a DMPS .308 AR and putting a adj. gas block, 22" .260 barrel with a side charge upper, and a comp trigger. Has anyone done this up here?
 
Why not get one chambered in 6.5 Creedmore? They're made from the factory that way (By DMPS, I believe) and are supposed to perform well. Exterior ballistics are similar to the .260 Rem.

Or were you more interested in building a project gun? Either way, I think you'll be really happy - that family of cartridges is great for LR.
 
I would rather build an AR and stick with 223 in a 1:7 and shoot the 77g SMK. Much cheaper to build and shoot and you will get great performance out to and way past 500. If I wanted to hunt then yea, 260 but we can't take our ARs hunting anyways.

260 would still be a fun project. An expensive one tho.
 
That sounds like fun. If you got the cash to do it and a range that will allow it then go for it. I like, personally, having the option to take my rifle on private/crown land and being able to discharge it legally. If you are fine with having an approved range only gun then by all means go for it.

I kind of agree with Magnum peanut and think it would be fun to build a fast twist .223
 
You know what would be great to build a 260 on? An M14s action. Not as cool as an AR-10 but non-res and lots of great stock, sight rails and aftermarket parts.

Just no 260 barrels...

Who says? ;)

Given the restrictive mag box, the creedmore or even the 6.5X47L will be easier to set up then the 260Rem.

Will they all work, sure but you will be spending ALOT of money to equal a basic factory out of the box bolt rifle.

Spend the same money on a bolt gun and you will shoot way smaller and consistent groups ie F class winning capable.

But then Harleys aren't the most technically advanced bike. doesn't stop ALOT of people from dropping small fortunes on them.

It will be a very interesting experiment and I should be able to help with barrels if needed.

.224 bullets are less expensive, and will go as far as needed on a range. AR-10/SR-25 platform rifles are super cool, but we can't take them out to the sticks to make real good use of them.

I agree, I wanted to get a better barrel for the xcr and just use that. But that didnt seem to work out.
 
Krieger makes a 260 barrel for the AR-10. It must be timed to the bolt though, and while we can send the bolt down, they cannot send the bolt up. Unless you can make other arrangements to receive the bolt from the US (legally of course...)....

Having said all that, I agree with the 223 in a 7.7" twist shooting SMK AR bullets.

The .223 is cheaper for sure, but with the 77smk it won't hold a candle to the .260, Creedmore or the parent .308's performance past 500m.

To the OP, the LMT MWS is an option, and I believe they are coming out with a .260 match barrel in the near future.
 
Semi-auto rifles simply do not have the accuracy of a good bolt gun. That negates many of the perceived advantages of calibers and bullets.

We are not comparing apples to apples here. In a Remington 700 with a match barrel, you are absolutely right, a 260 would slap that 223 silly. In an AR platform only out to 500 yards the only advantage the 260 would have is take down power. Not to mention the cost of putting an Ar-10 together with a custom chambered barrel would buy a lot of ammo and really nice optics.
 
I know some guys building the 6mmAR I believe it's called. That sounds like a winner for 500meters.
I have shot an AR .223 Wylde chamber using 80gr Sierra's to 500 meters and they did extremely well. I think that barrel was a Krieger too.

Very true. I'm certainly guilty of that. Here's mine and I'm not done yet. Always looking to see if I can get more horsepower from my Sporty.
