After some beer and thought...unless the safety bridge is FUBAR, the bolt was defective and the trigger group is faulty. I'd say both since the bolt had to partially be in battery for the pin to pass through the safety bridge. The pin will hit the safety bridge before the bolt turns which means the hammer had to hit the pin after the bolt had it indexed for the bridge. Since the bolt lugs were mostly engaged, the metal from recycled soup cans that the Chinese used for the bolt failed. The hammer released from the sear without using the trigger causing all of this.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I also did this once. Luckily it did no damage to my 2007 regular length gun. But the stupidest thing I ever done with the m14 is when I had a inline bore sighter in the muzzle to line up my new garand sight then forgot it in the barrel. Then proceeded to take a shot, peeled my 100 dollar flash hider like a banana. Lucked out once again and the war horse was unscathed by the incident.but more importantly I was unscathed. Lessons well learned.

Came across this neat little trick for loading less than eight rounds in a Garand (well new and neat to me). But he did do a major fail on the loading of one round.

In CMP approved vintage rifle matches I have taken part in. They teach the proper way to load single rounds for a Garand during the prone slow fire portion. The key is to only load the round HALF WAY into the chamber. This way the round is picked up by the bolt face and is travelling forward with the bolt at the time it is chambered just as if it were coming from the mag. The bolt is not hitting the round at full speed and there is no inertia imparted to the firing pin from the bolt being stopped by the round already fully chambered

Most guys opt for a even safer solution and installl a single load device which allows single rounds to be handloaded into the Garand mag.
