Don't take your Black Rifle to PoCo!

Something quite unbelievable happened to me at PoCo range today. I was there this morning with my son and his two friends, helping them to sight in their hunting rifles for an upcoming hunting trip up around 100 Mile House. I took along my AR as I hadn't properly sighted it in since installing a new EOTech, so this was a good opportunity for me to do so.
We had been there about an hour and a half and were setting up targets during the ceasefire. When I was returning to the firing line, I noticed that there were 2 RCMP officers standing at my shooting bench, holding my magazines and talking to JP, the Range Warden. I went straight up to them and asked if I could help them.....the older officer said that "somebody" had reported a "machine gun" was on the range (this puzzled me, as all my shots had been slow, deliberate fire at targets set at 50yds and 100yds. He also asked me why I had "high capacity" magazines. Both John and I pointed out the rivets in the back of the mags which seemed to satisfy him. He then took out his notebook and asked John for his name and address, which John provided to him. He then asked me for my name, and I refused to give it to him (I know my rights...;) ) as I was engaged in a lawful activity. The older cop then closed his notebook and said "Ya know....you're right...this is silly. I own guns too." I then asked the officer who had called in the report. He said "somebody from here" I turned to John and said "You mean somebody ON THE FIRING LINE had called the cops..?" John said yes.
I hit the roof....I told John that he had lost a member right there. Folks...I am now convinced that we will lose our guns one day and it's incidents like this that prove it to me. This was a cowardly attack on a fellow PoCo club member by (I'm guessing here...) one of the older "hunters" that were also on the range today.
It's not like it's the first time that I've ever had the "legality" of my AR questioned by these idiots...but it's the first time some cowardly a**hole has called the cops. What the heck is the matter with people? If he had a problem with my "machine gun", why didn't he bring it up with the Range Warden?
It was very embarrassing to me that it happened in front of my son and his two friends, and I am tempted to write a letter to the PoCo executive.
As a result of this incident, I doubt that I will ever set foot on that range again. :(

well 6star, young punks like you should not be scaring all the old hunters on the line /w your evil black machine guns. =)

its really a sad day when other members actually do stupid #### like that. But unfortunately its that time of year when all the hunters bring their guns out to get it sighted in... and well i guess a lot of these guys are just not educated enough....

but i don't think you should let that dumbass mess up your range day or your future range trips.... and DEFINATE write a letter to the exec or old murray to voice your displeasure.....

Screw that! I would put up a big sign on the bulletin board that said "if my AR-15 is a machine gun then your bolt-gun is a sniper rifle!"

I would go to the range more, not less, as some people there obviously need to be educated about gun laws.

You got it backwards my friend..

The answer is to get every man jack who has an AR to DECEND UPONS POCO in DROVES!!!!

I want to see every shooting station manned by a MAN with an AR!! Toss in a few women and kids while you are at it!!

To do otherwise is to let the "hunter" types win!!!

Funny... if it were me I would have loaded up the mags and unloaded them downrange as fast as I could... again... and again... and again... until either I ran out of ammo or they all left.

Seems to me the uninformed one should get a little education.. If you don't go back to the range you may have helped justify , (in the callers mind), that he was right. I would make it my personal goal to pack that sucker and pop a clip or two every opportunity I got. Just for spite and giggles.

The older cop then closed his notebook and said "Ya know....you're right...this is silly. I own guns too."

Nice to see there are some cops out there (funny how it mostly seems to be the older ones) with some common sense who aren't afraid to use their discression.

I would have done most of all of the above if I'd been on my own....I was pretty sure that the ####### was still on the firing line, and had called in the "complaint" by cell phone. I'm also sure that JP knows who it was. ;) I "unloaded" a bit on JP (I know it wasn't his fault...) and he must feel a bit embarrassed himself that a shooter on his firing line sent for the cops.
Young punk....? Ho ho ho....I turned 60 three weeks ago.
IMO, the caller should have been charged with Public Mischief.

im in the process :)rolleyes:) of getting my AR, and i am a member of the PoCo gun club.

i have seen this type of stuff happen on more than one occasion, mind you not involving the RCMP, which dissappoints me as a, soon to be, AR owner. PoCo is definitely one of the better ranges in the Lower Mainland and im more than happy to drive there to shoot. if something like this were to happen to me, i wouldnt hesitate taking a week off work, spending a thousand dollars on ammo and sitting there pumping .223 downrange with my AR from when the gate opens to when John kicks me out at night.

just to spite them. plus i get to sight in my ar over and over and over again:D

You leave, they win. Go with Storm on this one, and bring friends. If
you can't turn their hearts, turn their ankles so we know them by their limping.

i just thought of something, we sould arrange an AR day at PoCo. plan a day and everyone with an AR can bring it just to prove a point. imagine that an entire firing line of AR's:runaway:

lol it would be great.

add a few .50 cal and .338 lapua in the line up :p .. that would make for a fun day....

That caller was a ####in pussy. I'd drive down, but I have neither an AR, nor an ATT covering into BC. :p

Lower Mainland AR shooters, UNITE! and cap off a mag for me too!

+1 89crxtech, if they don't like the AR, then they'll hate the 14" black 12ga!

its actually a 20" mossberg 590, but i used to have a 16" remington 870, it was WAY louder than the 20" mossberg. when the 870 went off it scared the sh** out of this young lady next to me who was loading mags for her husband. i felt bad at the time but looking back it was kind of funny.

with the 20" i can get 9 slugs out pretty fast and it turns heads, but its really just for sh**s and giggles.

I understand you frustration because of some idiot. However, I think it's a good idea to keep frequenting the PoCo range. Whoever was the dumbass, he got to see that his call was fruitless, and the scary(sp?) gun was in fact legal. The caller's intent was probably to make you stop coming to the range, so do the opposite. Don't give him the satisfacton. I'm sure the caller will be pissed off if your still coming to the range. Offer fellow Po Co members the chance to shoot off some rounds on the AR and win fellow gunners to your side. :)

I'm sure John was caught in a pickle, and he is probably on your side. Next time offer the RCMP fellows a chance to shoot your AR. If they say 'No thanks', INSIST they each shoot two mags to VERIFY your AR is not a machine gun. I'm sure they would take you up on that.:)
I'm also sure they'll be smiling after the last round, much to the consternation of the dumbass who called.

Nobody will respect the caller and maybe HE WILL have to stop coming to the range.

I would have offered the RCMP guys a go at the AR, would have pissed off the caller and may have introduced the cool RCMP guys to AR's. Last time the Quebec SQ came to my range, we played with the sirens hehe.

Oh, and I make a point to lay out my black guns on the bench when it's hunter season, they get looks, mostly they are of the curious type, then I get to educate some by talking to them and letting them try.

Hmmm...PoCo has a sign in sheet for ALL members. The exec. could contact members present that day and remind them about range ettiquette and proper channels to voice concerns.

Exactly the way to go. Gun ranges provide a safe, educated, legal, and professional place to enjoy shooting sports. Any member of a gun club who calls the police to encourage harrasement, fear, or discrmination against legal and responsible gun ownership should be ashamed of themself. The club should ensure it's members understand that this behavior would not be tolerated.

Now if you were acting like an idiot and the range officer failed to take control of the situation then calling the RCMP might have been a suitable measure. (Not likely the case)

Whatever the case, keep going to the range. All firearms owners need to learn to respect one another.
