I heard about a new tactic Conservation officers have been using in the Peace Country. They're hiking around wilderness areas, in plain clothes, and approaching other hikers. They strike up a conversation about bears, then gain people's trust by showing them a pistol, and saying there's a risk of bear attacks. If the unsuspecting people take the bait, and admit to having a handgun, they are arrested. People need to think twice about breaking the rules. The consequences can be pretty severe.

Just how much of a problem do they....[edit]..... think this was/is to begin with? The vast majority of canadians don't own handguns to begin with. Most gangbangers I've seen don't seem the type to go hiking in the woods anyways.
I swear, you gotta wonder what motivates these departments sometimes.

OMG... after posting the above, I remembered a story a few years back a friend told me. He had gone off the beaten trail with a 10/22 and was plinking away when a plainclothes guy came up to him and asked him what he was shooting. He ("the guy") then produced a handgun and said he was going to shoot targets too, my buddy just kinda "okay?!" and the guy just left. I wonder if this was the same tactic??

I don't. Was your nephew the one approached or did he hear it from someone else who heard it from someone else?
I'm saying this would theoretically be all over the news at the worst, and at the least be notable somewhere as a pending court date - unless these supposed fishing expeditions turned up nothing which would likely be the case.
I don't know about you, but some hiker wanders up to me, pulls out a G20 and asks if I have one with me too, that would put me on edge a bit regardless if I was carrying (legally) or not.
It is a good morality tale, however, not to be a dumb ass braggart to a complete stranger entraping you if you are breaking the law.

Honestly can anyone imagine a CO getting off his fat you know what and walking around the bush. You ever try and get them to come to your place for a real problem? If you have you will know for sure this is a BS story.
