Can anybody explain the electrical tape thing to me? I have no idea what you guys are talking about.


Was the person who shot that barrel, still around? Geez
 
Coverin' the muzzle with plain vanilla black electrical tape while hunting, keeps snow, rain, mud, leaves, black flies and mosquitos out of the bore. :)

When you shoot, the column of air ahead of the bullet blows the tape off the muzzle. Consequently, it has no effect on the bullet.

Ohh I see what you mean. That is actually a good idea and many people around here actually do this? Well thank god I read this thread because I never would have thought of that.

Yup what Ted says.

And when the going gets rough I even wrap a couple layers around the end of the muzzle with half the tape sticking, half overhanging the end of the barrel. Then squeeze the overhanging bit together. This will not come off and guaranteed waterproof. Yes you have to shoot through the tape but I have checked accuracey at 100 yards and unless your using your 1/2" championship benchrest rifle you won't see any difference ;) One thing though, don't store your rifle for a long time like this. Condensation can stay at the muzzle and start rusting..
 
If electrical tape is too low tech for your flashy rifle, you can go high tech and use finger cots. They are finger condoms that you can buy at the drug store or industrial supplier.
 
Last week I saw some pics of a barrel that looked the same but the fella had left his boresighter in and pulled the trigger:eek:

That would ruin your day.

this rifle was sent to me thru Dan...the cousin of a friend of Dan's shot it...it cracked the fore end tip...no other damage to rifle or shooter......well, maybe a bit of hearing damage.....he wants his old barrel back too....go figure:)

That's why the front sight on this rifle is set back 3/4" from the muzzle, it makes it easier to tape the muzzle.

Hell of a way to get in to clean the barrel - but seriously, good post and I'm glad no one was hurt. I know on military rifles (AR-15 etc) you can get black or red plastic flash suppessor caps to put on - Has anyone seen anything similar for hunting rifles??
 
The annoying "balloons" sold to kids for water bombs will work, although after trying them I went back to electrical tape. I wouldn't hunt without it.
 
In WWII, the guys would tell get more condoms, by telling the guy behind the counter they were to put over the gun barrels of the guns on aircraft. Some actually did get used for that!

Because of the wartime shortages (rubber), when some officers in the US Army requested thousands of condoms for D-Day for this purpose, apparently Winston Churchill signed off on the idea on one condition:

That they use the largest condom available in Britain, and label it "Small".

Those pics always make me wonder why anyone would flute a barrell. That spilt might have started further back and ended further back if it was fluted?

Glad buddy was still abale to carry it into the shop.

Thanks for this reminder...I (my hunting rifle) used to always wear a "muzzle rubber" - but lately I had neglected to do this. I won't anymore.
