I have a few higher end scopes I dont want ring marks on. I have a few options - Burris Signature Zee rings with the plastic inserts or could I wrap a piece of electrical tape around the scope before setting it in the rings or would that throw alignment off and put stress on the scope tube?
thoughts?

The Zee rings are the way to go to ensure no marring of the surface, also removes the need for lapping the rings.

You could use the tape but that still doesn't ensure you won't crush the tube or gouge it with a sharp or misaligned edge.

Don't use electrical tape. The adhesive eventually starts to get gummy and your scope will creep. As others pointed out, Zee rings or lap the rings. There's no guarantee that you will get some minor shine to a matte finished scope.

Use a torque driver set to the correct torque setting as specified in the papers that came with your rings. I bought the Wheeler Engineering torque driver and haven't had ring marks on my scopes since.

Two methods - Use Burris Signature rings or use a quality ring and square them with each other and lap them.

Don't place tape or shims between the scope and the rings. It interferes with the fit and ca cause damage to the scope tube. (1 inch scope tube in 1 inch rings = there is no room for anything else).

rings, bases and action all have to be properly aligned to get stress free/mar free mounting. A one piece base and good rings gets you closer. Tasco used to make a one piece piece (all steel and heavy) that allowed each ring (that sat on studs projecting through the base) to have appropriate adjustment to permit stress free/mar free mounting... otherwise the simplest method is Burris Signature rings. Its not easy to lap two rings (each with a top half that has to be sufficiently loose - or not mounted at all - to permit the lapping rod to work properly) without causing them to get out of round. AND depending on your scope ... you may find that the tube diameter isnt exactly what you think it is ... nor the same diameter front to back.

Its a not a job for every one and Burris Signature rings achieve excellent results with minimal work.

I put a drop of Lock Tite in the bottom half of the ring - so the scope won't skid from sharp recoil - when taking it apart later, it can easily be cleaned off the scope with a thumbnail. This makes lapping usually unnecessary - and there is no need to torque it very tight - though you could re-torque a little tighter a day or so later.

thanks everyone. I think I will go with the Signature Zee's for my Swaro Z6 on my hunting rig - especially since I want to move the scope between 2 rifles - both with picatinny rails. I have a set of Badger Ordinance rings for my target rifle - great rings but a bit heavy ... but maybe I will need to check into a set of ATRS rings or TPS rings in the future. Looked at the ATRS site and the rings look great!
