After my success on new years over the deer kill my buddy Jake decided he wanted to come out for a set over what is left of the carcass.... Jake had never taken a dog before after hours of effort and he is "that guy"... thousands in equipment... every scent, caller, decoy known to man and no success.... After talking with Jake we decided to set up a night set and see if we can change some of that up.... We reached the set at 3:00 and put Jake's coyote decoy near the deer kill... making it look like it was having a nibble.... Here's a stock pic of what jake's Deke looks like...
I took out my big dig howler (Thank you Kerry Carver) and started with a few loud howls and waited 10 minutes, followed by a few more howls.... I then turned on the Foxpro and started the coyote greeting call at full blast like the previous hunt.... I allowed it to play for 25 minutes then shut it off and started a few crow calls on the hand caller..... Just then, I spotted movement to the right of the set.... another small female comes out like last time, only warier.... she turns towards the kill and sees the kill and decoy and starts the trot.... I tell Jake to get ready on the trigger and he hunkers in... as the female gets halfway out to the decoy two more dogs come out of the brush... One hangs back while another starts to make its way across the field.... Just as I start getting ready to grab the mouse squeak in case I needed it BANG!.... Jake pops the female.... The rear dog jumps back in the brush and the second one on the scene makes a beeline for cover.... I grab the .223 off the shooting sticks and let out a woof... Yote two stops in his tracks and just as I get him in the scope bolts again... I find his chest in the crosshairs and leading best I can I squeeze the trigger and his chin hits the snow, he rolls and gets back up running like nothing happened and off into the woods.... Jake heads up to check out his yote and we look for sign.... sure enough I find blood on the snow with drops about every ten feet.... I let the scene settle half an hour and start the track.... And ther, about 40 feet into the woods found him laying there... shot was farther back than I like but not bad based on the circumstances....
Jake Looking over his first yote and texting everyone he knows.... lol....
My dog on recovery....
