I have an old eastern arms 16 sxs that is giving me problems. When I fire the first barrel, it's like the second barrel uncocks. I've had it to a shop on locke st. in Hamilton twice. They can't seem to fix it, and I'm getting tired of the over 1 hr. drive each way. I've asked to talk to the manager or owner repeatedly and the guy at the counter won't let me. I've asked if they will pay for shipping and I can mail the gun to them. I've asked them to throw in a box of shells for my trouble. All I get is negativity. I'm through with dealing with incompetent gunsmiths and employees who treat customers like crap. So far I've paid the guy $60 for a fix that didn't work and $150 for gas. Does anyone know a gunsmith that can actually fix a double and is close to Niagara falls?

Hmmm - The gun was produced years ago as an economy model. There is a good chance that the "right fix" is going to cost you more than the gun is currently worth. How much are you willing to spend on a gun that is worth 150 -200$ in working condition?

Yes, don't be surprised if a proper fix by a competent double gunsmith will equal or exceed the value of the gun so you have to decide if it's really worth it. If it has sentimental value, then it might be worth the cost, otherwise I wouldn't be spending a great deal on it. Also, if you find a competent gunsmith, expect a bit of a wait before it even gets looked at. I know someone who restores vintage doubles but not sure if he gets involved in straight repair jobs. Did you talk to Frank Ryan at Frontier Gun in Fonthill? You can also try contacting the Sporting Clubs of Niagara. There's at least a couple of private gunsmiths that work from home who have tables at the SCON's gun shows.
