double rifle owners

Hey for all the double rifle owners out there what do you consider good accuracy and consistency in group size and for what distance are your guns regulated for? I am planning on buying a sxs rifle in 45-70 with adjustable regulation. I'm hoping to get 2 shots from each barrel to group 4" or better at 50 yards. Just wondering if this would be a average real world expectation? I've read that some holland and hollands can group 2" at 100yards but I'm only spending a very small fraction of that kinda money so I'm not expecting that kinda groups

2 sets of shots inside 4" at 50 yards is perfectly adequate for what a double is for, presuming you're speaking about a SxS. O/U doubles are a whole 'nother kettle of fish. My Merkel 140AE 470 NE will do a bit better than 4" at 50 but also keep in mind that you won't be shooting it from the bench so you won't get the absolute last word on accuracy out of the rifle. Close, but not every last tenth of an inch.

I prefer to see 3" groups at 75 or a 100, ...allows a bit of room for real life shooting. But it really depends on the gun and ammo, date of build. Turn of the century guns were expected to give under 6" but a lots of the new rifles will go 2".

Just work your loads up to the point they don't cross but remain parallel.

The 45-70 you're looking at should do 4" with the right combo and lots of work, but remember that doubles are basically a closer range hunting gun that provides 2 quick shots in a time of need.

I'm going to be using this gun on bear in thick cover so shots won't be far. Maybe 100 yards if I saw one on the road but 50 yards should be my max distance. Ill have a bolt action for any longer shooting.

At 50 yards, even a SXS shotgun will group slugs close enough to kill a bear; a rifle will be much better. As BUM suggests, chances are you won't be able to shoot up to the rifle under field shooting conditions.
