Double Rifle?

It has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager to own a side by side double rifle. I would love a .375 H&H in a quality but affordable gun. Why can't a modern firearms maker make one for around 2 or 3K? WTF. I don't need gold inlays or super detailed engraving just a quality action with a select walnut stock.

I bought a Valmet 412 with 9.3X74 barrels and 12 gauge barrels used and it shoots good with factory loads both barrels in 2 1/2 to 3 inches at 100 yards. I like SXS and have a couple of old ones but haven't taken the time to play with them to get the loads requied to make them shoot. Orginal doubles are getting very expensive now.

My Tikka 412S with the 9.3X74R barrels shoots under one inch with both barrels, and quite often I can get a 1/2", three shot group with 285 grain lapuas and IMR 4350.

Onliest problem is that he likes the shotgun barrels with the 28ga Brileys so much that he hardy ever puts the rifle barrels back on it any more!

It's not the gold inlays and engraving that make double rifles expensive, it's the mating of 2 barrels and regulation of them that is costly. Think about it- You want 2 completely different barrels to hit the same point of impact.

Eassier said than done.:)

It seems both Blaser and Merkel make the 9.3x74R in a SXS double for 4500-5100 bucks. Anybody own a Blaser S2 or merkel 140/141 and care to comment on satisfaction with it, or critique?

Comments welcome.

Signed, a prospective buyer.....(I hope my wife doesn't read this.... )

I've got both Kreighoff and Merkels and either are good, solid using guns, and good value for your dollar. Progression into Heym and Chapuis, Searcy, and then the high value Europeans and British really just adds dollars and engraving, making them better to look at and a better investment as they'll keep increasing in value. But for most, a Merkel will get the job done and provide all the satisfaction of ownership.

I don't think you can get a Merkel 140 or a 141 for $5100. If so I would like to know where I can get one! I would probably go for the 141 as it has a smaller action, shorter bbls and best of all, the adjustable regulation. I think that right now the Chapuis are cheaper.

When I was in Alaska I held a few doubles, a Merkel in 470 was one of them. It fit me well enough to use with confidence, LOP was a little long, but you are expected to cut them down and put your own pad on them.

I held a Blazer S2 at TSE in Calgary and did not really care for it. That being said, if I got the deal of the century on one I would not turn it down. It also has an adjustable regulation "wedge" at the end of the bbls, I don't really know how it works. The action is unique and looks strong but the bbls have a funny hood over the chambers making it harder to reload.

I don't own one but very nearly spent the money a few years ago on a Heym. I spent along time looking at Chapius' - but came to the conclusion the build quality wasn't there. If you can't afford anything British stick with a German made double.

"where the hell do you find a place to buy or look at double rifles in Canada?"

Keep an eye open in "Access to Firearms" for dealers, peruse the gunshows, talk to quality gunsmiths that work on fine and expensive firearms, and just generally let it be known that you're interested. Check out forums on double rifles such as NitroExpress.com and Accuratereloading.com. Or, fly north with some good scotch and send me a pm. ~Arctic~

I surfed a number of the websites like doublegun.com, gunsamerica.com, gunbroker.com gunsinternational.com., to see what in heavens was out there. Truly you never see these at your local store!

Perhaps we should approach one of the sponsors to put a deal together for a bunch of Merkel 140's in 9.3x74R!

I was advised that the distributor has none in stock, and we'd be lookin' at 8 months wait:(.....and I can't do without a new rifle for another moose season. I refuse!

Anybody sellin?
