I might be in the market for another double rifle. What I'm looking for is a SXS "self regulated" rifle. I did own a Blaser S2, which is self regulated, however I'm looking for other brand names. I only killed one bear with the Blaser and would like to hunt bears again with one. Thank you in advanced!

Small bore rifles of 9.3x74R or smaller caliber sometimes are made with adjustable regulation. Merkel 141, and Krieghoff Classic are two good ones that I know of. Either one would be a fine choice. If you were thinking .375 and up, none of them are made with adjustable regulation, at least as far as I know.

Thanks Longwalker, I did notice that the Merkel model 141 did have the self regulated barrel; not the Krieghoff. That's my intent, to purchase a double chambered in the smaller caliber. The 8x57 sounds interesting, however the 30-06 offers more for load development. I did not rule-out the over/under doubles as well, however the sxs are soooooo nice. I'll explore the Krieghoff for their offerings.

I am pretty sure they are not what you are looking for but he Baikal sxs doubles can be self regulated too.

Chapuis also makes doubles you can regulate yourself.

Thanks praireguy, I viewed one this afternoon, Chapuis in a 9.3x74R at the Calgary Shooting Centre. Awesome rifle, except a bit light in weight for the 9.3, however excellent for the standard cartridges. The Chapuis Classic X4 is their only model for self regulation, at a very respectful price. No thanks on the Baikal.

If you’re not ruling out over under CSC has had a fabarm 30-06 forever, represents a good deal in today’s market. A guy I know who has owned a double or two have told me they are the most accurate double they have fired and apparently regulated at 100?

No self regulation though so meeting none of your criteria, I will show myself out

A 30-06 seems attractive because of familiarity, but double rifles should really be fed proper rimmed cartridges. 7x57R, 7x65R, 8x57IRS, 9.3x74R are the small bore double rifle standards. Rimless rounds require finicky and fragile extractor plungers and are more difficult to pull out with gloves on. I personally wouldn't own a double rifle in a rimless chambering. However, I certainly agree with adjustable regulation on a small bore double rifle. I have had two rifles re-regulated, and it cost over $2,000 each time. Worth it to me, but expensive! I'd rather buy a more expensive rifle that has a regulation system built in, and do it myself when necessary.

I certainly feel that way about single shots; after a 243 BRNO K1 I went to 8x57 JRS and never looked back

It seems unlikely I will be buying a double anytime soon but one in 8x57 JRS is next on the “list”. Prices for lower end ones seem to have exploded though. I was quoted ~5500 on a VC sagitairre, an increase of ~3000 from the last I saw them at retail. Similar price increases for Italian sxs slug guns. Hence my suggestion to look for one available in Canada

I have a Chapuis X4 in 8x57JRS. Great rifle and it has probably the best walnut for for the price. The rifle is easily regulated. I had to email the UK importer to get detailed instructions in English on the regulation. If you pick one up send me a messsage and I’ll forward you the English instructions.

I have narrowed it down to the Chapuis X4, in either the 8x57JRS or 30-06. I might have to delay the purchase, until I purchase a Mauser Original. Thanks for the offer on the instructions to regulate, I'll catch-up on a later date for that information.

Track I'm not up to speed on regulated or non regulated barrels with double rifles but I can tell you about one that I have. It's built by Raick Freres, Liege, gun maker started by two brothers beginning in the 17th or 18th century up to World War Two. They manufactured quality hand built custom firearms made to order. I received this, as a gift, from a very good friend back about 15 or so years ago. It has two sets of barrels; rifle 8X57 IRS and shotgun 20 ga. The off barrels can be carried over the shoulder in a leather shoulder case.

I've fired the rifle at 50yds and 100 yds, with open sights, and was pleased with the tight groupings between both barrels. Used the six'clock hold at 100 yds. and couldn't be happier. If it were a critter it'd be dead before he new it. It has 14 1/2" LOP, and for me, it was easy using the rifle barrels as I wasn't hunched over the rifle for sighting.

I'm not sure if an outfit like this would be easy to obtain or what it would be worth but if you happen to come across one it wouldn't hurt to take it for a spin.

I should mention I'm not trying to sell this one as it's a keeper. Just thought I'd show it off.

Beautiful double, Rod and great cartridge! However, still a bit far away from what I would prefer. The rifle must be self regulated and capable of having a scope mounted.

Krieghoff Classic has adj reg. I have one in 30R Blaser, set up for 184gr RWS Evo at 90m. It does what it is supposed to do, solid at 200 yds at 4", some days less. I had the african bigbore stock put on it, not a fan of the hogsback, irons, Recknagel swingoff scope mount put on it, Recknagel peep, interchangeable posts on front sight. Have a Leupold 2.5 Deltapoint on it at the moment, fine to 200yds, haven't ran it at 300 yet, but, shouldn't be an issue. I liked the Krieghoff decocker setup, it works as advertised, the front trigger is a set trigger on the small cal units, it will get your attention the first couple of tries if not ready for it. I have 300ish rds thru it now, zero complaints. CSC was keeping brass, certainly keeping ammo as well, I shud have 184gr RWS bullets arriving this month from them ( not cheap, but, what about a DR is?). I didn't order the stock long enough, so had to add an extension which got it to probably 17" or so.

Very Nice double 209jones! I have half your rifle, a Krieghoff Hubertus single barrel .30R Blaser. Wonderful quality all around & great rifle.

Beauty of a double, 209Jones! The cartridge is similar to a 30-06 with a small shot of steroids, I like that.
