Double Rifles?

I wanted a 300H&H, but, they wouldn't do it, looked at 30R specs, decided that'd work just fine, and I like oddball stuff anyway. That was 2012, took about a year to get it, base price was bearable, dollar was good at the time. Stock and sights and scope mount and rings added 3500.00 in options. Ordered brass and ammo and dies (RCBS custom shop) which all arrived before the gun, found a guy in BC that had 5 extra boxes of ammo, caught the scope on sale (1-6 Z6). I looked hard at VC and Chapuis & Merkel, but I liked the K-gun decock setup, and they would regulate at 90m, everyone else was at 50m, which I thought was fine for a big bore, but not this. Because of the stock, it req'd a wood upgrade, which was worth it once I saw it. It's been a learning curve with it, not at all the same as shooting single barrel guns, but it has been fun so far, great to carry and handles like a shotgun. Found the scope a bit heavy, decided to try the Leupold sight, that makes it nicer to carry and works like a damn for my purposes. And ya, I have arms like an ape, took it in to put a different pad on it, I thought it was too short, wanted thicker pad, he says, "it's way too short for you", you can see the result. It was an interesting process doing that. When I ordered it, I just measured off one of my shotguns at 14-3/4". It made quite a difference as to recoil, way more comfortable to shoot.

interesting and great rifle. a friend of us in the hunting association wanted a double rifle in 300hh mag and he ended up with a 300 win mag (i think he was a chapuis but the factory and shop were not that far to do the measurements) always wonder why he did not choose the 30r or even the 9.3x74r with lighter bullet but the combo with the z6 first generation was working great on wild boar and red deer.

A 300 H&H would be ideal for a double rifle, however very difficult to locate; and if found, probably very expensive. However, I do have two bolt actions and one single shot in the 300 H&H. For my next double, I'll be targeting the Chapuis X4 (self regulated and scoped), in either the 8x57JRS or the 30-06. I want to reach out to 200 yards with the double, out at the range and field.

a double or combo needs to be a rimmed cartridge but certainly my eastern europeans ancestry speaking to me about it ...

If I bought another one, I'd likely go with a 6.5x57R, maybe a 7x57R, they'll kill whatever needs killing at the ranges people shoot with a DR, and in N America that is all you really need, if it is properly regulated, 300 yds is doable. 30R Blaser was made to be able to rechamber a 30-06 in a singleshot or DR, and have a bit better performance. Chapuis chambers a 30-30Win too, that would be adequate, cheap to shoot, and fun. I know there is/was a fella out of Fort Mac that has a FAIR Iside he has ordered extra barrel sets for, apparently no gunsmithing req'd, he seems pretty happy with his. I didn't much like how light they were, saw a 20ga/30R combo set a few yrs ago, thought it could be kinda nasty to shoot in the 30R. They're setup much the way a Chapuis is, with laser regulation, front sight is sorta strange too, at least on the one I saw.

A 20 gauge/30R set would be a pretty handy rig on a field trip.

Yes, a European rimmed, such as the 8x57JRS would be my very first choice, in the 4X Chapuis, with a nice Swarovski on top of it.

I have narrowed it down to the Chapuis X4, in either the 8x57JRS or 30-06. I might have to delay the purchase, until I purchase a Mauser Original. Thanks for the offer on the instructions to regulate, I'll catch-up on a later date for that information.

Excellent choice. Here are photos of mine along with regulating instructions I had sent to me if you end of ordering one.

I didn't go with the Chapuis, instead, the Merkel Model 141 chambered again in the 9.3x74R. Regulation on the Merkel is most simple, I have both barrels shooting 1.5" apart from each other on the same horizontal line at 100 yards. My next outing at the range is to find POI at 200 yards. BTW, beautiful Chapuis double, and classic cartridge!

Didn't know that they made side by side doubles that could be self regulated. Seriously cool.

Beautiful gun Neev.

I think a small bore double, combo or kipplauff is begging for a rimmed euro chambering for sure. 8x57 JRS with rn or SD 196 grain bullets seems perfect

Krieghoff Classic has adj reg. I have one in 30R Blaser, set up for 184gr RWS Evo at 90m. It does what it is supposed to do, solid at 200 yds at 4", some days less. I had the african bigbore stock put on it, not a fan of the hogsback, irons, Recknagel swingoff scope mount put on it, Recknagel peep, interchangeable posts on front sight. Have a Leupold 2.5 Deltapoint on it at the moment, fine to 200yds, haven't ran it at 300 yet, but, shouldn't be an issue. I liked the Krieghoff decocker setup, it works as advertised, the front trigger is a set trigger on the small cal units, it will get your attention the first couple of tries if not ready for it. I have 300ish rds thru it now, zero complaints. CSC was keeping brass, certainly keeping ammo as well, I shud have 184gr RWS bullets arriving this month from them ( not cheap, but, what about a DR is?). I didn't order the stock long enough, so had to add an extension which got it to probably 17" or so.

Darn nice rifle Jones.

I had a Blaser S2 in 9.3x74R that was easy to regulate, but sadly had to sell it a number of years ago due to meet some financial commitments. I recently got back into the double rifle game with an auction purchase, where I picked up a Winchester Grand European O/U in 9.3x74R. I mounted a Leupold Vari-X3 1.5-5x20 with a German #4 reticle.

I was concerned about the lack of adjustments for regulation having read that Winchester did not shoot the rifles to regulate them but used a jig to set the regulation of the barrels.

So, I took it to the range and was pleasantly surprised that it shot a 2.1" 4-shot group at 100yds. The interesting thing was that the second shot from each barrel was touching their respective first shots. I was shooting the Hornady 9.3x74R 286gr InterLock SP-RP and getting 2326fps. I will be using this rifle for my cow elk draw this year.

I am currently awaiting my recent Rock Island Auction purchase of another double rifle, which is a Armi Menegon O/U in 7x57R.
