I took a friend out turkey hunting this morning; he is a new turkey hunter having just passed his course in April. Fortunately, he has one hell of a custom box call though!
We were set up at the edge of a field just west of Barrie where I have seen some birds over the past few weeks, but had no luck when I went out last week.
We set up in the same blind for 5:30 and almost immediately had a response from at least four different birds, probably 200 yards or so away. About 6:00 we spotted a lone hen about 150 yards away, but she stayed well away from our setup and vanished. The toms continued gobbling like mad, but we were convinced they were still on the roost because it didn't sound like they were getting any closer. Eventually we heard them fly down, and not long after we were treated with a superb sight - three toms running in a line across the field, straight for the decoy!
The birds came right in, obviously we were well concealed because they didn't seem to have any idea what was going on at all. They were very close together and not presenting an ethical shot opportunity, and after seemed like forever they finally moved apart slightly - at 15 yards I drifted the one on the right, my buddy drifted the one on the left, and it was done!
Always nice when a plan comes together...
