Doubling on quads

A passenger on a quad designed for one makes for some added difficulty for the driver. You're pushed forward further than you normally sit, it is harder to stear, in short, a bit awkward. Having said that, my wife and I have travelled many hundreds of miles doubled on the Big Bear, from the desert dry washes of Arizona to the buck brush country around Atlin, in far northern BC.
However, when a man wants to double with me, here is what I tell him. Passengers on my quad have to meet a certain criteria. And you, being of the male gender, have failed the first rule! I find that an easy way out.

Only nubile, young female Russian translators are allowed to ride double up on my quad! Guys, unless they are dying, can walk.

My business partners brother comes down to hunt and they only have 1 quad so they get ribbed real bad when they are doubling. I find it halarious . I had to be doubled last year when i seperated my shoulder. We left my quad in the bush.I was in so much pain i didnt really care that my crotch was so very close to his ass.INSERT PUKE ICON HERE.

A number of ATV manufacturers are now making "Two-Up" ATVs that are specifically designed to carry two passengers, including Polaris with their new X2 Sportsman, Arctic Cat & Bombardier/Can-Am. I have the Polaris X2. It has a heavy duty dump box in place of the rear rack. It has a fold away second rear seat for the passenger. You can convert the second passenger seat in less than 20 seconds. Works great and you still have room for cargo. Polaris lengthened the frame of the Sportsman, moved the shocks/suspension back further so that the weight of the second rider is directly over the rear wheels. The problem with "doubling" on single passenger ATVs is that the weight of the second rider ends up being far beyond the rear wheels, which is the source of the handling problems and danger involved with doubling.

I actually made up a platform on my rear rack and mounted an extra seat with handles. I also attached stirups made out of car seat belt material. On my Eiger the seat is right above the wheels, not behind

Works well, sunny-boy loves it. Now he can come out with the old man.

Doubling on an ATV meant for a single operator is up to the discretion of the owner/driver of the ATV.

There are no laws as of yet that say doubling is forbidden. However there are many safety stickers which say not reccomended.

As for the 2 Up ATV's, they may very well have their place. One must realize that there are going to be significant changes in the way it will handle. It requires both passenger and operator understand the techniques required. (weight shift, other manouvers)

They are not practical for my purposes , but they do serve a function for others.
