Hey guys, has anyone used a 1 in 10" twist in 264 caliber.I can get a great deal on a xx premium douglas blank 30" long.Wanting to chamber in 260 or 260 AI OR 6.5 X 284 AND PUT IT ON MY 700 sa.
Im wondering how heavey of a bullet will work in that slower twist.
Any info would be app.
Thanks
Frank:)

Hi. Douglas barrels have long been known as high end barrels. They're called premium for a reason. Typical factory rifling twists for the .264 are 1 in 9. One inch difference won't matter a whole lot.
There are Canadian made barrels that are just as good, if not better. Mind you, a lot depends on what you call a 'great deal' and which contour it has. Douglas barrels start at around $275US. Installation of a blank(includes the machining) starts at around $225(Epp's) plus the cost of the barrel.

Douglas are on par with the best button makers out there. As to twist, It will not reliably stabilize the 139-142 bullets with a 260. I suspect even the 260AI will be touch and go except with very high velocities. Mach bullets like the 140 berger are long. Long bullets require more twist. Hunting ammo uses shorter bullets, and these work fine in a 9 twist. It is the length, not the weight of a bullet that determines its twist requirements. Most match shooters use 8" twists for the long heavy bullets

:)thanks guys.the deal was $ 200 for a 30" unturned blank.1 in 10 twist.
I will have to think about it.It will be a hunting light target rifle.I wanted to use around 130s.

personally i would let that "deal pass" unless i plan on shooting 9.5 vmax even then the twist seems way to slow for any planned long distance shooting with bergers lapua or the like. i perfer 1 in 8. what is the price for a unturned blank anyways. 200 bucks for a rifled pipe seems like the manufatures price

If you want to shoot the heavier bullets I would pass on it. I have a 264WM in 10 twist and 140 grain Sierra Spitzer Boat Tails nor 140 grain flat base Nosler Partitions will stabilize in colder weather. The low drag match bullets are worse, and even some of the lighter ones will not stabilize.
