Sorry if this is a dumb question but with a GLFS would I have to re-zero each time the gas lock nut comes off?

From what I"ve heard ..yes.
#1. The set screw on my front sight is too long. Either it needs to be ground shorter, or the sight comes off the base every time you disassemble. So grind down screw.
#2. People say gaslock sights need to be checked as they can be out as much as 6 degrees from removals and re installation. Maybe a witness mark on the underside on the base and the gas block might help but I have yet to try.

I'm thinking that if the gas lock isn't indexing consistently, the problem lies elsewhere on the gun. The gas system to barrel interface might allow twisting of the assembly of those two parallel tubes (barrel and gas cylinder) if they are not tight fitting to each other.
On the other hand, I don't think a short barreled gas lock sighted M14 is for accurate shooting at great distances either. You are probably using it as a close quarters gun or have some sort of other optics you rely on.

Thanks chopper. It is a bit silly that they are for the standard length barrel seeing as most people will buy them for guns that have been cut.

That's good. Not saying its not going to be accurate, but I doubt the first step in making a tack driver out of an m14 is shortening the barrel. I'm picturing the carbine version of a rifle is made for shooting off hand in close confines and probably with some sort of fast target acquistion sights. The guy who shoots at 300 plus yards probably the last thing on his mind is making the gun shorter. Those kind of shots are typically prone or off a rest and original length isn't an impediment. Sights would probably be either national match or optics.

So far my shorty seems more accurate than my long norcs (up to 200 yds) Im sure at longer ranges the diminished shorty velocity will diminish accuracy. I believe the shorty barrel is stiffer and whips less and more consistently, but I havent fully tested yet - waiting for more of the same test ammo --

This has been my experience too.
From what I have read velocity loss for .308 in short barrels is minor until below about 18-19 inches. This length may be the sweet spot for this cal; the benefits to the handling characteristics far outweighing a slight ballistic disadvantage. The really short Springfield guns are another matter. Using standard ammunition 16" or less is IMO sacrificing too much velocity for a general purpose rifle. To say nothing of the muzzle blast!

I too found that my short barrel is more accurate than my long barrel. Mine is intended as road hunting rifle for under 200 yrds so it doesnt matter to me much about the 600 yrd mark. I like the looks of the dovetail better than the HK style currently on mine. Anyone wanna trade?
The height of the front sight will remain the same at the gas block, immaterial of how much barrel is protruding out forwards past the gas block. The height of the front sight is a function of the sight radius, so if you change the position of the front sight along the barrel, the height would change. That doesn't apply as the gas block is a fixed distance away from the rear sight. The base was designed to be 1mm higher than the calculated correct height to allow for manufacturing tolerances on the Norincos as you can always shorten the front sight but it's difficult to make it longer. If the front sight ends up too high for your particular gun, it can be turned around so the screw head is towards the muzzle, which is a much better setup. Then the front sight blade can be recut to the correct height and relief angle.
