I lost the front sight off my 1911 this morning so I need to replace it. Who has staked sights and who uses a dovetailed sight? Other than the dovetail being easier to replace are there any advantages or disadvantages of either system?

Marstar has replacement sights, what make is your 1911, and is it single post or double post sight?

Staked can be wide or narrow tenon, or double post. You will need the proper tool to stake in a replacement. Cutting a dovetail is something that has to be done properly, a milling machine is the best way. Once a dovetail is in place, there are numerous options for sights.

It is a Colt slide with a single post. What I was wondering is how often does one lose a sight? Without a staking tool and the knowledge of how to use it it might be easier to go with a dovetail and a hammer. Or am I thinking to much?

I would stick with just moving the rear sight with brass punch and hammer, and stick with the stanadard front sight. Marstar sells adjustable rear sights for the 1911, that might be a better opition for you. you can get larger or smaller front sights to help with sight adjust ment
