Dovetail style Front Sights M14

I'd recommend chucking a Marstar ring sight in a machine vise and milling off the top ring. Weld something workable onto that surface and keep going. You won't find another Norinco gas cylinder lock for less than $399, but on the positive side you'll get a second rifle around it.

SEI is moving forward with making metric GLFS and DC Vortex... maybe 8 or 10 months of additional waiting.

not what i'm after

i want to keep my sight radius as long as possible. so i want to keep my front sight near the flash hider, or maybe with a coast guard brake. but not on the gas lock. then i can put on a sight with changeable front blades.
guess it will have to be a custom build

You can do that now. This is a picture of one of my Poly Tech barrels with an SEI Vortex.

All I needed was the the Chinese castle nut

I don't quite understand where you think you will be able to mount your new front sight. The current position is within 1/2 inch of the current muzzle. It is the flash suppressor that extends forwards another 3 inches.

There is a way to extend the sight radius with a "bloop tube". Some target shooters with old eyes or mathematical imperatives to have round numbers for their sight corrections, install tubes on their barrels. The bullet flies down the freebore. From the outside the tube resembles a dreaded silencer even if it is just a cylinder. The M14 barrel had threads and splines already, so you could modify an existing flash suppressor and castle nut with a bloop tube welded on the front end.

ramhunter, I think I know what you are talking about. I did it to one of my Sage's which unfortunately belongs to someone else now:(

Is this what you mean?

It is a Norinco barrel with a standard SEI Vortex and an Alley "Aperture front sight". It fits the standard dovetail on the Vortex as well as the Norinco and SA flash hiders so no need to get a cutter. Also comes with 6 aperture inserts. Brownells part number is 034-200-014AA.

Don't know about the Lyman but it beats the hell out of cutting a dovetail:p

Couldn't use the irons on the above setup as the scope bell was too large even with see thru mounts. Looked cool though:D
