Down the rabbit hole again with the 9.3x62mm Mauser...

Nice that you got your acquisition approval before the rifle landed. Kinda hard to hide that box as you walk in!

I'm in my own rabbit hole, and will be using the 9.3x62 brass to cut down to my desired 45 raptor. The dimensions are the same, but just have to cut it down to the 1.8" length. Should be easy.

Have you ever considered a lever chambered in 9.3 x62??? Working on that rabbit hole as well, trying to get a TD BLR into a multi caliber set up. Have some BLR barrel extensions on the way in the mail for that project. That one I posted in the gunsmithing forum, but might start a thread in there and post a link to it. Maybe get some more movement to the project. They did make a 450 marlin in the BLR that you should be able to convert easy enough into the 9.3x62.

Enough of my project, this one is about yours.

Agreed re: the acquisition. And a 9.3x62 lever, well now! That's interesting indeed.

Working from home is both a blessing and a curse sometimes ;) I don't need to sneak new boxes in (just sneak them back out again), but having a spousal sanity check is also a good thing once in a while. Of course, it also means I'm accepting packages for everyone, dropping off stuff to kids at school, having supper on the table when wifey gets home (also a good thing, her cooking would be classified a war crime in some places), and being stuck with general errands, too.

At least getting the boxes back out is easier if there is a used rifle going as well, the approval tax on that is usually just ice cream or sometimes a dinner for two out of the proceeds :ROFLMAO:

Look up Skinner sights website. The owner has a beautiful 1895 Winchester chambered in 9.3x62.
Thats a project that would not be difficult at all.

The only issue with the BARs is that chincy mag. There was/is a 10 round mag adapter that Browning offered in Europe for the last 20 years, but not here. It just meant at the range you were always fiddling around with that mag system, which is awkward at a bench. But they shot nice.
Anyway, I have a P17 with a K&S 26in stainless on it now to finish up. Not a great choice either, since the barrel will cost you more than most old clunky builds will be worth. But pretty much any 06 can be rebarreled to 9.3 easily enough.
I really looked at those Sauers being sold for less than 800, but like a fool didnt get one.
I have a second bolt built in progress, and its another financially absurd idea, but I will likely be happy with it.
For ammo I will just say it, the PPU isnt great, but its cheapness appeals to a lot of peoples wallets. I view it and Hornady as practice ammo to be honest.
While 9.3 can be expensive you can get good deals, and Prophet River is a good choice, as they usually have a few brands at better than average prices. The fact I could get Lapua from them cheaper than some people wanted for hornady, and even ppu was/is great.
If you want to go all in and are will to spend a little more, Europe is the place to look. RWS brass can easily be had and shipped to Canada, and there are a good number of boutique bullet makers there.
Hopefully one day the folks at Beretta let the RWS etc start flowing back into Canada.

There was one based on an 1895 win for sale not long ago on ####### (?). Cobbled together, and pretty pricey for what it was. But would be easy enough.

Well said and all true. Buy what you like (and can afford) and simply enjoy life. I bet most of us on here don't even have 20 years until they are pushing tulips.

Always been intrigued by the x62 in a Euro rifle.

Looking forward to your review of your x39 Alpha too !

btw, I bought-up most of Tradex's inventory of Elite 3500 scopes. Like you, the 3200 and 3500's have been excellent for my needs. Good luck finding a comparable scope for three times the price that the Japanese-made Elites were going for.

Today the spare mag showed up! Why a spare mag? Because, as a good friend says: "One is none when it comes to magazines!"

I know these little updates might be a tad boring, but each one is exciting to me as I continue to put this 9.3 together... And yes, it holds 5.

Jay, out of curiosity, and when you receive your Sauer rifle, can you let us know if the magazines stick or sometimes are difficult to seat into position.
I used to sell those Sauer 100 model rifles, and everyone had magazine seating issues.
When I contacted Sauer in the USA, they actually sent me a spare magazine for every rifle I had in stock, and for every customer that had bought one.
I wonder if this issue has been resolved?
Apparently the manufacturer is aware, or was aware of this problem.
Thanks

I will most certainly do that for you Thunderhog. First I've heard of this issue & I hope it's resolved! Can you comment on how long ago that was?

This was approximately 1.5 years ago now. As I’ve been retired exactly one year, and it was six months prior to that.
I had 12 Sauer 100 Models in stock. Black/stainless, black/blued, veil upland camo/grey tungsten, desert camo/bronze, and one other model I cannot remember.
Calibers were, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 7mm Magnum.
All of them had magazine insert issues….:)
But these guns are gorgeous! Smooth action, accurate, and 60 degree bolt lift….:)

Never tried factory ammo in my T3. But I loaded up some Matrix Bonded bullets for it for an elk hunt in BC, and found out that they were just slightly longer than the magazine...........I had not reset the seating die after loading some of the 286 gr PRVI bullets. Been loading ammo for over forty years, and make that rookie mistake!!! Luckily, I visited Kevan Peeling in Abbotsford before my hunt, and he had a set of dies that I used to seat the bullets a bit deeper.

This thought because of the discussion about the Sauer mags - and it would be worth seeing how they are for COAL when it is time to roll your own ammo for it.

Kamlooky, last piece of the puzzle is the dang-nabit rifle!!! Waiting for it to cross the country, lol...

And Doug, did you get an elk??? AND, if so, how did the cartridge do for ya???

Nope, I did have a SHOT at a six by six, at about an 85 degree angle down a mountain at about 300 yards (my guide lasered it and told me the actual distance but I forget). Just before I took the shot, he said to me "aim at the top of his back." I KNOW better, and should have shot low, not high. Anyways, I missed, and the bull took off. Luckily, another member of our party had winkled up the mountain track we were on, laid down, put up his bipod, and got the bull on his third shot. That was maybe 7 am, and it was almost dark when we finally got the elk up to the trail and back to camp. They had to rappel down to the bull to gut it out, then winch it back up the mountain. It was not an Ontario hunt, that's for sure!
